Apparently Fox started something by having Mike Pereira as a commentator. I have seen both Terry McAulay and Gerry Austin on bowl games today interpreting calls. I believe that they are the supervisors of the crews officiating the games. Good to hear from them.

Correct and I'm glad to see this happen.

Didn't watch any of the games you speak of but have to wonder that given the fact McAulay and Austin are supervisors of these crews, are they open and fair in their analysis of calls? It seems to me that Pereira often straddles the fence in his critique and doesn't always give a totally unbiased critique. He does have ties to the NFL. However, since he has NFL experience, no one can question his view. Additionally, he's not the crew supervisor. I find it odd that these guys would go on camera and critique their crews before talking with their crews.

You may be right, but in the comments I heard, McAulay and Austin merely interpreted what the rules were in particular situations, and I found that helpful. I'm not sure what they would have said if they thought the crews had made a mistake.

A year or two after he retired, Jim Tunney did a short, 30-second "you make the call" about NFL rules as part of a commercial break.

Bill Corollo just made a comment about a play in the Orange Bowl. It looks like ESPN has the supervisor of the game officials in the booth with them for its bowl games.

Before he left, although he didn't go on camera, Periera would often call either fox or CBS to give the party line on a call. As I remember, he never called to say the officials blew it but would call to justify those calls, (almost all of them), he could justify. The new supervisor doesn't seem ever to do this. I do miss the Wednesday night explanations and from time to time, Periera would even be critical of calls. I haven't watched any bowl games(they're a farce anyway and meaningless but that's besides the pint). Did these guys make any critical comment of disagreement with any of the calls?

The plethora of bowl games is nothing but a made for media, profit grabbing blitz. They for most part have been more advertising than game action, two minutes action, three-four minutes commercials. The media gets rich as we get bored. I can't stand watching past the first half for most part, ESPN will fill you in with what they want you to see anyway.

I forget when this occurred, but I googled Jerry Markbreit's name and learned he had some column in one of the CHicgo papers. If I am not mistaking it was a Q&A where readers could send in questions that he would answer.
