Michigan State vs. Wisconsin Early in the game, Steratore whacked Tom Izzo with a T. Izzo claimed someone in the stands behind him said the words and not him. Officials wave off a game winner by Wisconsin in OT. Backboard clock showed zeros, stadium clock showed .2 seconds. Officials supervisor stated that by rule the officials have to go by the backboard clocks. Steratore wasn't the lead official who made the call, but he was in the thick of it. es.pn/A3hYAo

I know a little bit about this technology. The clock in the background (on the LED strip) gets its data from the scorboard controller. Someone at Wisconsin created what is called an RTD (Real Time Data) sequence. It is how the time, score, fouls, etc are layed on on the LED strip. I have created a bunch of these. The scoreboard controller sends data to the computer controlling the LED strip and the computer sends it out to the LED strip. The problem is, as you probably already figured out, there can be a lag between the three devices. The backboard clocks are almost always directly hardwired to scoreboard controller. This eliminates the lag.
