Taking that hard spill early in the season actually helped doctors catch the cancer. It is a breathtaking story. Mr. Corrente has a long and very hard road ahead of him (similar to umpire Doug Harvey it sounds like) and his return to the field in 2012 is not a sure thing. Please keep Mr. Corrente in your prayers all though the offseason. bit.ly/y1rGMf

Scroll about half way down the page and you'll find the Corrente segment.

Corrente's umpire, Fred Bryan, #11, also had a harrowing health experience a few weeks ago and caused him to miss the rest of the season.

Mr. Corrente has been a real trooper and I am sure he will continue to be. I wish him all the best. I was surprised to learn the seriousness of Fred Bryan's situation, having a blood clot in his lung. I certainly hope Mr. Bryan will be OK.

Mr. Corrente is such a great man, he needs our thoughts and prayers more than ever here, I hope he got through his treatment today, at least he is at one of the nations best cancer hospitals, in Houston. If anyone has any information on him, please post it, and when you get up of a morning, Thank the Good Lord, you have another day on this earth. Good Bless You Tony Corrente.

Fascinating story. Let's hope they caught it soon enough and he can live a happy, healthy life.

I wish Mr. Corrente a full and speedy recovery, same for Mr. Bryan.

Great read. I hope Tony Corrente will be on the field in 2012, however I would totally understand if he decides to retire.

Great read. I hope Tony Corrente will be on the field in 2012, however I would totally understand if he decides to retire. I would suspect that he might not be completely recovered from the chemo by the time the 2012 season starts. If Corrente makes progress and wants to continue his career, I predict: Corrente will start the season on the sidelines. A substitute white hat will be appointed (like when Green substituted for Johnny Grier when he had a leg injury or when Dick Hantak substituted for Fred Silva while he recovered from a heart attack). If Corrente is ready to work at some point in 2012, the substitute white hat will either return to his original position or become a swing referee (and will be appointed R at the next open spot). OR Corrente will sit out 2012 and a new white hat will be appointed full time. Corrente will return in 2013 as a white hat, replacing a white hat who retired after the 2012 season.

Adrian Hill as the substitute if that happens? Or an older guy like Don Carey did in Blakeman's limbo...?

I was surprised to learn the seriousness of Fred Bryan's situation, having a blood clot in his lung. I certainly hope Mr. Bryan will be OK. NBA legend, Mendy Rudolph, collapsed on the court and almost died due to a clot in the lung. He retired. I hope whatever problems Mr. Bryan has can be corrected and he can return to the field.

That was really a great piece. Glad to hear the story and Corrente's determination to beat this.

Did Bryan collapse or take ill during a game or during the week?

Did Bryan collapse or take ill during a game or during the week? I believe during the week. There was no news of him leaving a game due to illness.
