This was the last game with the referee in the black cap. Starting in the 1988 season, the hat colors switched to what we have now. So, Grier never wore a black cap in his entire NFL career. Jack Fette had announced his retirement after this game. It was his 5th Super Bowl and first one in 10 years. Fette broke his tailbone on the opening kickoff. He officiated his final game with a broken tailbone.

Had Fette not been able to continue, Jerry Markbreit would have gotten into the game as a line judge.

You're right! He was alternate that day. That would have been a hoot to see! But, I'm glad Mr. Fette was able to continue in his final game.
