In this section, we'll be talking about rules changes, retirement announcements, and new hires. Ditto for the NCAA section. Wanna talk about HS plays and rules, head over to that section. The "Other Sports" section will break down basketball, hockey, and baseball officiating. The General section will will have threads dedicated to nostalgic and historic aspects of football officiating. Thanks for making this such a great site!

not sure if/how many retirements there could be, but my first two guesses as far as potential future R's goes is B12's Novak and ACC's Allen

Are we really looking at a major turnover of officials like 10 or 20? Or would the league cap it at a maximum number?

Are we really looking at a major turnover of officials like 10 or 20? Or would the league cap it at a maximum number? How could the league cap it if people decide to retire? The only option I see is to ask if some would stay on to permit a slower transition of new officials.

The league cannot compel officials to stay, but they can offer incentives to officials they would like to stay on for an additional year or two to make it worth their while (e.g. Swing Positions, assignment to a crew that conveniently requires less travel or has desired bye weeks). I know NFL officials are already part time officials but I do not see why the league cannot offer the ability to officials who are contemplating retirement the ability to work a "part time" schedule. It would also be a good way to groom new officials because they could split time with an experienced official at that position who can serve as a mentor

I could see an official staying an extra year or so. Let's say, just for instance, that Stabile and McGrath retire. Maybe another official that recently did a CC or Super Bowl. Mark Baltz might be mulling retirement too, but if some recent HL CC and SB vets retire, he might stick around another year and maybe have a more clear path to being assigned a Super Bowl.
