...in a Stanley Cup Conference Finals game . Yes, this did happen back in 1988 during game 4 of the Bruins-Devils Wales Conference Finals. This was a result of Dave Newell, Gord Broseker, and Ray Scapinello staging a wildcat strike after a New Jersey court issued a restraining order barring the NHL from suspending Jim Schoenfeld for his famous Game 3 run-in with Don Koharski (the infamous "...'cuz you fell you fat pig! Have another doughnut!" rant.) As the video shows, the three guys plucked to officiate lost control of the proceedings during the 2nd period. And has anyone on this board been asked at the last second (after an hour delay in this case) to officiate a game?

Scapinello comments on that game in an interview: Scapinello: Dave Newell was the head of the NHL's officials at that time, and if David hadn't been scheduled to officiate that game, I think we would have worked it.
We were in our changing room hanging out before the game and got word that Schoenfeld was going to be coaching after the team got a court injunction. Newell said if he's coaching that he wouldn't call the game. John McCauley [the NHL's director of officiating] asked me to do it, and I said no.
The thing that sticks in my mind most, and it really chokes me up because I love John McCauley like a brother, was that as he opened the door I saw the three replacement officials walking down the hall, and he looked back at us, and he said, "Guys, you know, you're contractually obligated."
I expected to be fired and it was certainly within the league's right to do it. I didn't get fired, and it didn't affect my status in the business. That's a real sore spot with me and I get real choked up talking about it. I wish it had never happened but it did. From this site www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2008/11/07/nhl-scapinello-halloffame.html

That was a tough spot for Scamps to be in since he was a bystander of the Koharsi/Schoenfeld incident, but I have to give him a ton of credit for sticking up for his fellow officials. Not to get too political, but the NHL would have difficulty trying to replace an official like Ray had the league canned him. Ray Scapinello is one of the top two officials in NHL history. Is John D'Amico the other? My dream crew in the mid-to-late-80s was Andy Van Hellemond, Ray Scapinello, and John D'Amico.

Paul Devorski in his prime could give McCreary a run for his money

Paul Devorski was a good one and spent some time ranked number 1 when McCreary wasn't.
