Jerry Bergman, Sr., was a throwback official who had to learn to tone down his interactions with the sidelines over the years. Back in the 60s and 70s officials were allowed to sass back at coaches, but McNally tried to phase that out. Bergman ran afoul one time for not checking himself. The following is an excerpt from the book, The Third Team: "I was on a crew with Joe Haynes, and he called three fifteen yard penalties in a row," Bergman says. "I don't know if they were good calls or not." But Indianapolis coach, Frank Kush, didn't withhold his opinion.
"You guys are having a bad day," Kush told Bergman.
"Well, we're having a better day than you," Bergman retorted. "I didn't fumble across the goal line and I didn't drop a pass in the endzone."
The Colts coach didn't take the observation well.
Having returned to his weekday job Monday morning, Bergman's phone rang. His secretary told him that Art McNally was on the line. Bergman had a pretty good idea what the call was about. Bergman picked up the phone and without as much as saying hello, told his boss, "Yes, I said it." ;D www.thethirdteam.com

I wonder what Carl Johnson would do if one of his guys said something like that to a coach.
