Thanks for posting. Gene's become one of my favorite officials. I don't know how he maintains his energy doing both football and basketball.

Nice article. He must be pretty passionate about officiating college hoops with all of the time and travel he puts in on top of his NFL and professional duties.

So big time college officials have to pay for their own travel? That is way less-than-ideal.

I would assume that they pay for their own travel and organize their own flights and such, and then are reembursed later on. It'd be too much for the conference to arrange and pay for travel for hundreds of officials weekly or whatever.

His story about his first reversal of a replay is quite entertaining!

In the past, Fred Silva, Jim Tunney, Jack Fette, Ron Winter, Tom Bell, Tom Fincken, and Robert Wortman have all worked Division One college basketball (although I don't know if Winter worked hoops while in the NFL - I don't think so).
Bell and Fincken hold the distinction of working a Super Bowl and a Final Four.

Bob Wortman also worked a Final Four and a Super Bowl. He worked the Indiana-Michigan championship game in 1976.

Wortman later went on to be Supervisor of Officials in the Big 10 conference. I believe Bobby Knight was instrumental in getting him fired from that position.

I have a friend who officiates Big Sky games and he makes travel arrangements for flights and hotels and gets reimbursed by submitting an expense report.
