According to NFL.com, there are some rule changes under consideraton by the competition committee. Some are excellent. Extending the overtime rule (each team gets one possession if the team winning the coin toss only scores a field goal) to the regular season. A no brainer of course. The other is to take ir away from the referee and have it done in the booth. Personally, I still think it should be done in the situation room the samne way the NHL does. Apprently they want to make all changes of possession automatically reviewed....as well as all possible scores. They might just as well make everything reviewable and get rid of the silly red flag and coach's challenges. And certainly the referees have enough to do without having to do the ir thing. It most assuredly will speed up the reviews.

I can see where they might be able to shut down too many men on the defense like we do in NFHS.
I really don't care WHO or HOW the replay decision is made, but I really, really, really, don't want the game interrupted too many times due to the Instant Replay Official getting too officious. There aren't too many stoppages in NCAA, and if all replays are initiated by the IRO, they'd better give him solid perameters.

The owners approved the overtime change and approved the proposal that makes all turnovers subject to review. es.pn/HiByT8I like the overtime change, but I'll bet we see the 2nd round of Sunday games pushed back to 4:30 or 4:45. With the potential of a prolonged overtime, networks won't want to make fans miss out on the 1st quarter of the 2nd game, which is usually the "showcase" game for CBS and FOX.

Question....a team wins the toos, has a long drive eats up nine minutes on the clock and on fourth down kicks a field goal....ther team of course now gets a chance to match.....do they have to score before the end of the 15 minute period? Or is the regular season overtime extended until that possession ends? And in those cases where you have two long possessions, will that increase the number of games ending in ties (let me say here I have never had a problem with an athletic endeavor, be it football (American, Association, Aussie Rules), water polo, field hockey, ice hockey ending in a tie during the regular season when you don't have to have a winner. A tie sometimes allows fans of both teams to leave the field (pitch, rink, oval) semi satisfied but I know that is considered un American. If the number of ties increase, will there be pressure to change the overtime to an unlimited overtime like they have in the playoffs?

If the number of ties increase, will there be pressure to change the overtime to an unlimited overtime like they have in the playoffs? This is a really good point. Even if team A only takes 6 minutes off the clock and kicks a field goal and team B takes another 6 minutes off the clock and kicks a field goal, it'll be interesting to see what happens when time expires. Is this addressed in the new rule? Perhaps a compromise could be to extend OT to a 20-minute period instead of 15...
