From this last season.

Referee: Since you are focused on the quarterback, how do you become aware there is a turnover?
Winter: Crowd noise is an indicator. But I probably tend to react more to what the offensive players do. Even while watching the quarterback you can see peripherally what the offensive lineman are doing. They begin to pursue because the offensive linemen change, of not their direction, certainly the speed with which they are moving to participate in the play.
Referee: Once the fumble occurs and is rolling toward the goal line, where is your focus?
Winter: I pick up the defensive player as he is returning the ball. My thought at the time was, "Where is the goal line and where is the quarterback?" I'm thinking I'm going to have people coming from my side, outside my field of vision. Once the guy knocked the ball loose, it came straight at me and I was in no mans land.
Referee: Once you were knocked down, are the players aware you're there? Do they care?
Winter: Certainly they don't care (laughs). I don't know if they're aware or not. It was fortunate that a Cincinnati player caught me in the ribs and knocked me kind of sideways. That put me out of harm's way because the ball was still two or three yards behind me and that became their focus. I was pretty fortunate. Had it been more of a direct blow, hard telling were I would have ended up.
Referee: How did it feel to be caught under all of that weight?
Winter: It looked real bad but it was basically arms and legs on top of me and not a whole lot of body weight.
Referee: Were you able to protect yourself in any way?
Winter: I was able to put my arms over my head and hope for the best. I carry the replay pager in my shirt pocket and that got knocked onto the ground. While I'm laying on the ground I'm thinking, "Maybe I can see the ball from here." Well, all I could see was the pager. I was able to stick it back in my pocket.
Referee: How did you escape?
Winter: The play was over. Some of the other officials were sorting out who got the ball and a couple came to me. They moved people apart and I got up.
Referee: Were you injured?
Winter: There was nothing obviously wrong so I said, "Let's go." I had tenderness and a bruise near the rib for a few days after, but nothing of significance.
