The following is an email that I received from a buddy of mine who was on the field for a BCS spring football game.
Bill Carollo was in attendance and I got a chance to shake hands and introduce myself. He gave us some of his time as we asked various questions about what he was looking for and the like. The big part of the day was the use of the wireless headsets worn by ALL of the officials. It is an experiment being done this spring and it was also done in the SEC. Mr Carollo explained he envisions the LOS wings, the R and the BJ would be able to communicate with one another via these headsets. It was something international soccer had been doing and the trials thus far looked promising to Carollo. He was crafting a proposal to introduce in the June football meetings. My hunch is that it is coming.
Thoughts?

I've figured on it at some point. I think I've seen rugby officials using them too. They aren't headsets though . It's more like what law enforcement uses - a small transceiver clipped to the belt with a small earpiece and a mic clipped to the shirt front.

FIFA officials use these headsets in international matches. There would some time savings I suppose when you have infractions and the official that threw the flag doesn't have to wait for the referee to come over, or running over to the referee.

Most professional soccer uses headsets. I've used them in high school games. Very effective. I believe the ACC uses them too for soccer

Podcast with the inventor of the wireless communication devices used in the NCAA spring games. I'd do this in a heartbeat, but it would take a season and a half of varsity football checks to buy ONE device and we need five....... bit.ly/M8nnBs
