I really enjoyed seeing him referee via youtube. I'm sorry to hear that he passed away. My sympathies to all who knew and loved him.
Here's a youtube of Wedge at referee.

How long was Don Wedge a Referree?? I didn't know he had ever been a ref... I remember a game years ago, that when he was a back judge, he had to be taken off the field after a collision, but returned shortly thereafter. He was a great official! RIP...

As others said, referee from 76-78, and was replaced by Jerry Seeman. Wedge returned to the deep wings for the rest of his career. I wonder how much of the idea was McNally's and how much was Wedge's to return him to the deep wings......If it wasn't his idea, it was probably pretty embarrassing for him. Wedge has many quotes in Fred Wyant's book, Offsides!

Fred, from the footage you put on here, Wedge looked very comfortable at what he was doing as a referee, and his game control, and announcements were as good as anyones, I know this was one game also...,However, I too wonder why he was yanked from this position...or if the decision solely was his...
