Greg Burks, Big XII referee and his crew were in charge of the Utah-BYU game this weekend. Third down fell incomplete with time expired. Crowd rushes field. Replay determines one second remains in the game so BYU lines up for a game tying FG. Watch what happens next.................................... bit.ly/RZF2PN

Uh oh...UNS penalty while correct by rule, should have been treated as a dead ball foul. Therefore, also by rule, the game should have been over after the blocked FG play, and the untimed down for BYU should not have been granted. Thank goodness the BYU FG attempt was no good.
The football gods were with the crew on this one.

I think, in the NCAA, a live-ball USC flag is treated as a spot enforcement. This was supposed to punish the hot-dogging into the endzone, but can also whack the crowd for storming the field during a live ball.

Not so. Fans = "non-player" in rule book language, and UNS by non-players are treated as a dead ball foul.
See 9-2-1-b and 9-2-5

Jedizebra....Go to unfair acts in rule book. You can't have thousands of fans running onto the field while a player is running with the ball. Why even bother throwing a flag at all if it won't be administered? What will prevent fans from running onto the field on the last play of a game when they will now have knowledge that it won't be penalized? I thought the crew did the right thing! Plus, with that much of a heated rivalry, they did a damn good job of preventing a fight from breaking out.

Mrcounty, I have a question. I thought all live-ball USCs this year were spot fouls. Or is it only on the offense on a scoring play?

It ended up being a running play that ended up behind the LOS. I believe they used the 3/1 principle. Enforcement therefore, was from the previous spot.
