Does anyone know? I know that the away team conference typically provides the referee, but there are some exceptions. I was just looking at the past three years of VTs referees, and its a very odd set up. Sometimes they've had the same crew 2 out of 3 weeks, without seeing some crews at all that season.
Here is VT since the 09/10 season
Bama - Matt Austin (SEC) Marshall - Walt Davenport Neb - Karl Richins (big 12) Miami - Tom Zimorski Duke - Walt Davenport BC - Tom Zimorski GT - Jeff Flanagan UNC - Ron Cherry ECU - Cooper Castleberry (was he CUSA before?) Maryland - Tom DeJoseph NCSU - Brad Allen UVA - Tom DeJoseph Tenn (bowl) - Ed Ardito
2010-2011 Boise - John ONeil (B1G) JMU - Jerry Magallanes ECU - Tom McCreesh BC - Jeff Flanagan NCSU - Tom Zimorski CMU - Michael Conlin (MAC?) Wake - Jack Childress Duke - Walt Davenport GT - Tom Zimorski UNC - Jack Childress Miami - Tom DeJoseph UVA - Jack Childress FSU (acccg) - Brad Allen Stanford (bowl) - Tom Walker
2011-2012 App St - Walt Davenport ECU - Wayne Winkler (CUSA) Ark St - Jeff Heaser Marshall - Ed Ardito (CUSA) Clem - Ron Cherry Miami - Jerry Magallanes Wake - Tom McCreesh BC - Tom Zimorski Duke- Tom McCreesh GT - Brad Allen UNC - Ron Cherry UVA - Brad Allen Clem (acccg) - Jerry Magallanes Michigan (bowl) - Stricherz (PAC12)
2012-2013 GT - Brad Allen Austin Peay - Jeff Flanagan Pitt - Jeff Heaser Bowl Green - Walt Davenport
Basically, we've have 5 times in 3 yrs where we saw the same crew in the Yes, No, Yes format. Is this normal? Has anyone else tracked their team?
(Also, we've only have Ron Cherry 3 times, bummer)

O'Neill is a Big Ten guy.

It is normal especially when you get to divisional play as the leagues tend to assign their best Referees to the games they expect to be the biggest (hence why Michigan/OSU is almost always Bill Lemmonier or John O'Neill) and Virginia Tech has generally been the top 2 or 3 teams in the ACC so when they have big games it is usually Zimorski or Allen (and until he retired, Childress). It seems to be that the pecking order for the ACC this year is Allen or Zimorski get the top two games, Magallanes and Cherry get the next 2, and after that is really a crap shoot though there is some variation so that a team does not get the same crew back-to-back or see one crew more than 2 or 3 teams in a season. I can understand why leagues do that, but if I were the head I would probably try and make sure my crews were more even so I could pretty much have any crew work any game and do my best so teams do not see the same officiating crew more than once at home
