The Side Judge at Michigan State who made the very controversial calls was Scott McElwee, formally a Referee in the Big Ten, now a Side Judge. It looks like Alex Kemp replaced McElwee at R. I'm mildly surprised that McElwee didn't try to get back into the ACC as a R. Maybe the ACC was sore for him jumping to the Big 10...... I never want to see an official fail, but the last year and a half has not been kind to Scott McElwee.

Kemp was a part time Referee last year, so it was actually Mike Cannon who replaced McElwee. It seems like it alternates each week between Kemp and Cannon as to who is working, probably to ease them in.

It's not very often that a crew earns a 4.0 (according to our grading scale), but the crew that worked the LSU-Alabama game was about as perfect as a crew can be. They nailed several close calls and did a GREAT job of working together to sort out a couple of plays. Most importantly, they let the players decide the outcome of the game. I thought he onside kick reversal was poor and on Alabama's scoring play at the end they didn't have a proper formation (no of players on LOS). LSU playing the "prevent" was a terrible choice though

I disagree with you on the onside kick, to me that was a pretty obvious overturn. I do not remember the formation on the game winning Touchdown so I will not comment further.

I thought McElwee was from the MAC? He might have done a stint in the MAC between the ACC and Big 10.

Bill Carollo is extremely loyal to the elder McElwee and tossed his son a bone after he was fired from the ACC. Upon making it to the B1G, he was demoted after 2 season back to SJ.

just like professional athletes who are sons of athletes I cannot fault Carollo for taking a chance on the son of an official, especially one who had as distinguished of a career as Bob McElwee. If McElwee cannot hack it as a college SJ his only shot at the NFL will be as a replacement official
