From 1983: referee Dick Jorgensen takes an elbow to the head while breaking up a skirmish and is out for the count.
Wow, that is one of the worst shots I've seen breaking up a scrum.

What's truly remarkable is the fact that Jorgensen finished the game. I don't remember if he missed any time because of it. Nowadays,with all the emphasis on concussions, he almost certainly would not have finished the game and probably would have sat out at least the following week. I remember this game; it was one of the worst played games in the history of Monday Night Football.

That was brutal. I remember another MNF game several years later when Jorgensen got hit in the nose when breaking up a fight. He stayed in the game and announced the foul with a bleeding nose. The camera zoomed in on this face, making the penalty announcement with blood pouring out of his nose. He did take some shots over the years.
