That is very strange. My only guess is that Johnson grabbed the ball and wanted to argue a call with Jones and wouldn't give him the ball until Johnson said his piece.
Other than that, it seems like an over-reaction by the referee.

Amir Johnson said in his postgame interview that he has a superstition where he needs to touch the ball after every free throw. Like I said earlier, this is surprisingly common in the NBA. Maybe the players like to get a feel for the basketball or something like that, I don't know but it is very common. To me Jones acted like a bully and almost baited Johnson into flipping out. I am not excusing Johnson's behavior after his ejection because he acted like a 5 year old, but Johnson was very calm before the ejection and Jones could have been more professional. Reading Johnson's lips all he said was "Let me see the ball, let me see it." Harmless if you ask me.

If you let one player have it after the referee has it, then you have to let all players touch it.
And that ain't going to happen. The ref got it first. Too bad for the player.
I support Jones.

I get where you are coming from JR, but this is a very common occurance during free throws and you never see Officials do anything. Even if the Ref catches the ball first they will usually let the player have the ball if they request it.
I think Jones completely overreacted. I am not excusing Johnson's behavior because once Jones won't let him have the ball, he needs to just let it go. It shouldn't that much of a big deal that you have to get into a tug of war match. Jones overreacted which led Johnson to completely overreact. I expect a suspension for Amir Johnson and I would fully support it because you cannot act like that.
