HP - Paul Runge 1B - Randy Marsh 2B - Bob Engel 3B - Steve Rippley Rippley calls a foul ball a HR. Mario Soto of the Reds charges Rippley earning an ejection. The call is reversed, and now the umpires are charged by Jim Frey, Don Zimmer, Larry Bowa, and John Vukovich. The Cubs take turns screaming at the umpires. Zimmer has to pause several times to catch his breath or get his heart rate under control! Frey is ejected for throwing his wind breaker in the air. Soto is ejected for charging Rippley. When Soto learns about his ejection, he attempts to charge the umpires and his tackled by a team mate and Zimmer, instigating a brawl! First of all, this would hardly ever happen today. Zimmer, Frey, and Bowa would be ejected for prolonged arguing. The umpires would never, EVER have allowed the argument to take 20 minutes. I don't think Engel, the crew chief, did a good job in handling this situation. I'm surprised that Paul Runge didn't attempt to move this process along. He was always a tough, no-nonsense umpire that commanded respect and moved things along. If you can block out a chunk of time this is an interesting, historic, and (now) pretty funny scene. Also, it is a lesson in how to NOT allow an argument to drag out!

Actually, today with replay and HD quality picture, there probably would not be as much of an argument to start!
