From the Honig's Facebook page:
Back from the pre-season MLB umpire meetings in Scottsdale. Congrats to new full time umpires Alan Porter, Vic Carapazza, and Manny Gonzalez! Retiring after last year were Derryl Cousins, Tim Tschida and Ed Rapuano. Ed remains with MLB by taking a position as supervisor. New Crew Chiefs for 2013 are Jim Joyce, Fieldin Culbreth and Ted Barrett. Congrats to them for their well deserved promotions!

Cousins is north of 65 so time was catching up to him. I enjoyed watching him umpire. For trivia buffs, he was the last active umpire to have worn the red AL coat in 1979 - and he is the longest tenured of the umpires who crossed the picket lines in 1979. He outlasted all of the umpires who were on the roster in '79.
Tschida and Rapuano are a bit of a surprise; however Tschida has missed time due to injuries.
The crew chief appointments are all very good.
Thanks for the info!

Rapuano's last game he wroked last season was on June 1st, so he clearly had an injury of some sort. He seems pretty young to retire but I wish him the best. He was only able to spend 2 seasons as a CC.
The hirings are not surprising in the slightest, all three worked for basically the entire year last year and did a good job.
As for the CC's, I personally thought Nelson would be a CC over Culbreth, but I prefer Cubby anyways so I am happy for him. I think Nelson is close but he really took a step back last year. While he still worked an LCS his attitude was rotten and he was very confrontational at times. Those are not qualities of a good leader and it was really unlike Nelson to act like that. There should be more openings over the next few years and there is no doubt in my mind Nelson will get one in the near future.

Congratulations to all the new hires and all the new crew chiefs, especially Fieldin Culbreth. I got to see him in the minor leagues. As for the retirements, Cousins wasn't a big surprise due to age, Tschida has been a bit injury prone, and Rapuano missed a significant portion of last season with an injury.

I thought with 3 retirements Wally Bell would make CC this year though cannot argue with the 3 who got it. Also doesn't it seem like Mike Estabrook and Mike Muchlinski have been at AAA forever

Muchlinski has been in Triple A since 2002 and a call-up since 2006 while Estabrook has been in Triple A since 2005 and a call-up since 2006! I will admit I completely forgot about Wally Bell when making my previous post. I am a little surprised he is not a Crew Chief but he has an inconsistent playoff track record and that probably concerns the MLB a little bit. I would say Bell, Nelson, Hernandez will be the next in line for a CC spot with Miller, Everitt and O'Nora behind them.
Also, Ted Barrett and Fieldin Culbreth are the first two Umpires hired during the 1999 mass resignations to make Crew Chief.

Cousins always struck me as a mild-mannered umpire but this video shows that he could mix it up if he had to.

All 3 are deserving....look at recent Playoff Assignments for both Ted Barrett and Fieldin Culbreath. I thought these 3 were easy assignments, O'nora and Nelson not far behind...their turn will come. I wonder how long wally Bell and Angel hernandez will have to wait....

As long as Bob Davidson and Larry Vanover wait longer Although Barrett and Culbreth (and also O'Nora) got their chance when the mass resignation strategy backfired, those 3 were probably among the next in line for a spot as they had all been among the primary vacation replacement umps in the AL for years prior to 1999. Bill Miller and Mike Everitt, on the other hand, were probably much further away based on the number of appearances they had prior to 1999

There's no video I can find, but in 1996, the Yankees home opener was played in what was basically a continual snow squall, Cousins had the plate, and worked the whole game in his shirt sleeves! At least he was wearing those odd red shirts the AL umps wore for a time in the mid 90s, so you could see him! ;D Meanwhile, the rest of the crew (Welke, Brinkman and Kaiser) are bundled up like mummies - especially Kaiser - which is odd, as Kaiser is from Rochester, and Cousins is from California...
Congrats to all those retiring and congrats to all the new CC's!

Brian O'nora (7), Jeff Nelson (45), Wally Bell (35) and I hope Angel Hernandez (55) is not selected as the next in line cc. Retirements can be expected soon for Tim McClelland (36) and John Hirschbeck(17) who has had medical issues.

I know Angel Hernandez has a bad reputation and some of it is well deserved, but his playoff track record is outstanding. He has missed the Playoffs just once in the last 13 seasons. His attitude has also gotten better. Ever since getting moved off of Joe West's crew at the All-star break in 2011 he has not recorded an ejection. To me, he is right there with Nelson for the next CC spot and ahead of Bell and O'Nora.

John Franco and Mike Piazza might have a different opinion although that game he ended in Atlanta because he wanted to hasten his all star break was a dozen years ago.

Definitely has gotten better but if someone needs specific types of umpires around him to keep him under control probably not a good idea to make him a permanent crew chief, but if it means Davidson or Vanover do not get it I will live with Hernandez as CC
