NFL FJ-80, Greg Gautreaux, is interviewed as secretary of the Lafayette Officials Association. www.katc.com/news/local-referees-hoping-more-join-the-team/"I think because of the harrassment that they take some people tend not to go into officiating. They see it as a work that they don't want to take that abuse."

Gautreaux makes good points, but I'm stunned that some crews are going to only four officials. We have small numbers in my part of Illinois, but we can always field five officials (the max in Illinois, or at least the max that schools will pay for). We have the BJ only and no deep wings.
The biggest thing that runs off prospective officials is not the mayhem at the HS level, but it is at the pee-wee level. I've said it a million times, I am against tackle youth football for kids younger that sixth grade. Little kids don't have the physical or emotional strength for tackle football. Plus, most youth leagues are not well supervised. The dads run the league and there is hardly any discipline for out of control parents (the biggest problem) or coaches.
Tackle football must be run by a strong, competent state association that backs its officials and imposes stiff penalties for unsportsmanlike acts. I'm sure Louisiana has a strong state association. I just think the new officials wash out before the HS level due to out of control youth football.
