We all know that the no-call was blatant but death threats and the lack of research in order to create a conspiracy are just ridiculous.
It is simple, Gary Cavaletto and others blew the call. It has nothing to do with him living near Los Angeles, he just missed the call at a terrible time. People need to stop trying to make this something it is not.

The reaction to this says more about the current state of public discourse than about the NFL or its officials. I couldn't agree more, Russ and FF7. This is not the first time refs have made an obvious mistake in a big game--and it won't be the last, even if there are video reviews added. It was a horrible mistake, but at the end of the day it was just a mistake.
I wish there were some platform where folks could show some empathy for the refs involved--not excusing an error, but just acknowledging that one error doesn't define a official's career or integrity. Can football zebras help? As FF7 said....this is getting past all perspective.

I’m concerned that owners like Benson from New Orleans will demand action from Goodell who is not a big supporter of officiating as it is.
The Commish May be forced to take some public action. We will see what he’s made of

The problem with anything these days is that there's too much time being spent on debunking conspiracies to get actual reform done. The issue here will be how does the NFL address an egregiously missed call without overcorrecting and making a bigger mess than intended. That's why I'm not a fan of reviewing PI penalties. That would be bringing in an element (similar to using review for targeting in college football) that replay was never intended to address. I know we have a great amount of technology at our fingertips; but do we dump human officials in order to justify use of technology?

A+ article.
(And thank God someone finally mentioned 17-2-2 in print. In the online copy of the rule book, this is RIGHT ABOVE 17-2-3, and they are the only two items on that page--this is more obvious that the missed penalty. I can stop swearing at my computer now. )

First time here. Thanks for letting me post. Panthers fan here, not a Saints fan. I agree that death threats for blown calls are ridiculous. Those people making death threats need to be arrested. However, when an blown call like the combined missed PI and Helmet to Helmet that happened in the Rams vs Saints game Sunday, there must be an investigation into how that call was missed. If not, then then integrity of the NFL becomes questionable, imo. Today, I heard CBS NFL play by play announcer Ian Eagle state on the radio that the conference championship games' officials are made up of "all-stars" from different crews. If true, how can 2 all-star officials miss BOTH of those TWO infractions on that play. Also, if these 2 'all-stars' are better than all or most of the other officials at their positions (line judge, side judge, etc), we either have a bunch of poor officials or a bunch of lousy evaluators of officials in the NFL. Neither one of those two conclusions are good. So what happens between now and the Super Bowl. 1. Is there a replay or do over of the last 2 minutes of the Rams vs Saints game? I say NO because the game's over and the Rams have been declared the winner. 2. Do we get a ruling by Roger Goodell declaring the Saints the winner? I say NO because we don't (and never will know)what exactly would have occurred if the call had been made correctly. The Saints would have PROBABLY won 23-20 (Take 3 knees, make the Rams use their last timeout, Will Lutz makes a FG with little time left for the Rams to come back}, but we'll never know now for sure. Also you create a precedent that's a "slippery slope" for future games 3. Is there a meeting between Goodell, officials rep(s), coaches rep(s), and players rep(s) to try to make sure that something like this never happens again (replay rule changes, replay official can 'buzz down' ANYTIME to correct a terrible blown call, etc)? I say YES because it's obviously a no-brainer. This meeting could be announced now and occur sometime in the offseason. 4. If it is determined that the reason for this blown call was the refs who saw it just "missed it", then they MUST be FIRED immediately. I'm sorry, but a mistake that bad, even if it's their first one, is simply and totally unacceptable. I can give an example in my line of work, but this post is already too long. Thanks again for letting this retired teacher post

Also, I just remembered something important missing from my previous post. I think most of the Saints fans think that they were robbed of going to the Super Bowl by the league or the 2 officials. I would feel the same way if it ever happened to my favorite team, the Panthers. A lame butt apology from the league would give me no satisfaction or feeling that this would never happen again. However, I would feel better if the two incompetent officials were FIRED. That way, those 2 could never blow an obvious call again. I bet that if this occurs, a lot of Saints fans would feel like that weren't cheated on purpose by the NFL.

I am sick and tired of people saying that one play doesn't change the outcome of a game. IT DOES! We can all agree that this missed call had a drastic effect on the outcome of this game. The problem is that this call is so obvious anyone watching on TV can make it LIVE!!! The NFL needs to take action, doing nothing is absolutely unacceptable. I think it would be more appropriate to ban Patrick Turner and Todd Prukop from doing any playoff games for 3 years and force Gary Caveletto to retire as he is 63-64 years old. (I am also a teacher).
