In the Ravens-Steelers game, a flag for defensive holding on a receiver was thrown. The officials conferenced and announced, "there is no foul for defensive holding because there was a fake to the running back." I have never heard of this. I read this as if there is a play-action pass play, defensive holding on receivers is legal. Obviously I am missing something. Thoughts?

I think it may just have been a poor explanation. The flag was likely picked up because the hold took place when it was looking like it would be a handoff.

A RB who is faked to may by rule be held legally within the tackle box. Without seeing the play, my guess is that the LOS official saw the defensive holding action and the Referee saw the play fake. Then they pieced it together to get the play correct.

Thanks. I 'assumed' the holding was called down field due to where the flag was thrown, but your explanations make sense.
From the same game: Ravens had the ball 1st & 20 after a holding call. Jackson dropped to pass, scrambled, and ran for a 10 yard gain. A flag was thrown for defensive holding. The official announced that the 5 yard penalty would be assessed after the end of the run. After the play it was 2nd and 5. How can a team accept the play AND the penalty. I would think their options would be ACCEPT making it 1st & 10 after a 5 yard penalty, or DECLINE the penalty making it 2nd and 10. Making it more confusing to me is the fact that defensive holding if accepted is an automatic first down which was not the case.
