Thanks for posting your interesting insights and observations, FredFan7. I didn’t realize that Big Ten and PAC-12 officials used to share Rose Bowl duties. You mentioned that Chris Coyte is one of your top six referees in college football. Who are the other five? I’m going to guess Brandon Cruse, Jeff Heaser, John O’Neill, Reggie Smith, and either Steve Strimling or Ken Williamson... So many good ones. I'd put (not in order): Coyte O'Neil Cruse Heaser Smith Strimling Another official to keep your eye on is Adam Savoie, a young official currently in the ACC/AAC and in the officiating development program. I think we'll see him on Sundays.

Was that Amanda Sauer at the 2:49 as the alt official covering the flag on the field? Trying to see if that's long hair out the back of the uniform or a lumpy balaclava. I think its her.

The Big Ten crew did a great job staying out of the way and letting Notre Dame and Alabama play football.
No flags in the first half, but the crew had to step up and make some calls in the second half, dropping the flag 11 times (two were declined).
Each team was flagged once for roughing the passer. Those calls were tight, but consistent.
Two replays in the first half were routine and the replay decisions were not controversial.
I'm glad the crew flagged Saban for his temper tantrum, and I hope this is the start of all the officials asserting control over the sidelines.
The crew worked well as a unit, which is a tip of the cap to veteran referee John O'Neill.
Congratulations to the entire crew for a superior effort.

That was his CJ. O’Neill called it on Bama, which I think was a marginal call at best. His CJ got the ND one. Notice how his flag is still in his pocket when calling it. I thought the 2nd one was a good call by the CJ.

Referee David Alvarez sees Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields try to sell a roughing call and immediately goes to him to tell him he saw the whole performance and was not amused. This type of communication helps establish (or continue) a relationship with players. Even though Alvarez didn't throw a flag, Fields knows he's watching. www.clippituser.tv/c/qmzwxa

Lawrence fumble "stands"
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence appeared to fumble the ball and Ohio State recovered for the turnover. Replays showed Lawrence clearly losing the ball on the way down and putting a hand on the grounded ball prior to the Ohio State recovery. In order to re-establish possession of the loose ball there needs to be firm control and time enough to perform an act common to the game. There is no indisputable evidence that Lawrence was able to do so therefore "stands" is the correct decision.

www.clippituser.tv/c/aryegqUmpire Russ Pulley faces a Travis Dye run right into the lap. Sometimes the best thing for an umpire to do is stay still. If he tries to guess which way the runner will go, he might move right into the runner's path. Here, Pulley stayed still and Dye ran around him. I'm sure Pulley breathed a sigh of relief and spotted the ball for the next down.
