He was a BJ before a Referee in Big 10, but a LJ when entered the NFL before becoming a referee- why not a BJ then when entering the NFL?

He was a BJ before a Referee in Big 10, but a LJ when entered the NFL before becoming a referee- why not a BJ then when entering the NFL? According to Markbreit's book, McNally said he wanted Jerry to be a LJ because he could work close to the referee and learn what it takes to be a NFL R.

What's up w/the arm bands one of the wing officials is wearing? There were more restrictive substitution rules back in those days - something like if you came out in the first quarter, you couldn't go back in until the second quarter. An incoming substitute had to actually report to an official when he came into the game. Visitors reported to an official wearing one color arm band, and home reported to an official wearing another color arm band.
