As soon as games are officiated in a computer lab, I'm out.
Discounting balls and strikes, the plate umpire needs to rule on HBP, obstruction, catcher's interference, and fair/foul. Those amount to maybe 12 of those calls per game.
But the biggest job is balls and strikes. They wear heavy equipment in sweltering temperatures and risk getting seriously injured by foul balls.
So, the plate umpire is going to put his health on the line for a dozen calls, simply to announce what the ear buds tell you to announce?
No wonder we had several early(ish) retirements this offseason.
