There could be a policy that if you work the finals one year, the next year you can only advance to the quarterfinals. That will give more officials the opportunity to work big(er) playoff assignments and show the NBA the skills they have and if they are up to task.
I worked a HS football championship this past season (five rounds). Even if I have a BETTER year this year, state policy states that I won't work more than two rounds of the playoffs this year. Different animals of course, but the NBA can adopt the same concept.
It has to be difficult for an official who ranks between 13-18, and isn't one of the bosses "favorites," that it will be impossible to get a white jacket. Then their skills erode and the boss gladly drops the official down the to quarterfinals, second round then one round and done.
Lots of good NBA officials put in 20+ year careers and never got past the quarters or semis.

My problem with NBA officiating is not listed in there and it is similar to NHL. Once you get to the finals you are basically a lock in every future season. NFL and MLB have certain officials/umpires who make the top tier on a yearly basis, but even in a down year you don’t get it just because. It has definitely gotten better under Monty McCutchen as there is a little more variety, especially in the first 3 rounds. But we still have had Scott Foster make the Finals every year since 2008, Capers and Brothers every year since 2012 (although Capers will miss this year due to injury), Davis every year since 2013, Zarba every year since 2014. The core has remained the same for the last 10 years which is definitely not realistic. As good as all those Officials might be you cannot tell me they are top 12 every single season. That just doesn't happen. McCutchen has done a very good job getting new Officials in each round and getting younger Officials farther in the Playoffs. Even the bottom of the Finals roster has had a decent amount of turnover, but the top remains the same and that is still the biggest flaw in NBA Playoff Officiating assignments. With Bernie Fryer and Don Vaden you legitimately could not move up. At least with Monty there is room for growth and advancement. It definitely has gotten better under Monty, but if it is the same guys year in and year out at the top what does that say about the officiating development that new blood is not getting in and the same CC are the best ones every year?

Second Round Officials announced. It is the same 28 that I guessed on the court. It is also the same two alternates plus Brent Barnaky and Aaron Smith. Scott and Corbin return to the second round after a 1 year absence and Buchert returns to the Second Round for the first time since 2019.

Any thoughts for the game 7 assignment? I think it will be 3 out of 4 of Zach Zarba, Tony Brothers, Eric Lewis and Bill Kennedy.

Conference Finals Officials have been announced. The only thing I got wrong was Mott instead of Lane. Surprised they went with Mott as he only worked 1 game in the Second Round whereas Lane and Petraitis both worked 2 including a Game 5. Surprised neither of those 2 are even an alternate. This is also Brian Forte's first Conference Finals after many Second Round Assignments so congratulations to him.
