Over his 25-years in the big leagues, John McSherry was one of the more mild-mannered umpires. He averaged less than two ejections per year, including six seasons with no ejections.
But on this late summer afternoon in 1982, McSherry had had it with Lee Elia and the Cubs dugout. He dumped Elia, Jody Davis and Joe West jumped in and tossed Larry Bowa for yapping at McSherry while Elia and McSherry yelled at each other.
Even in arguments, McSherry never seemed to lose his temper. But something set him off that day.
The announcers are Milo Hamilton and Lou Boudreau. Hamilton was usually a pretty even-keeled announcer when it came to umpire baiting, but he went all Hawk Harrelson here which was an extremely bad look for him.
