So having fun with our playoff database, we decided to see which jersey number was worn by NFL officials the most in the postseason. We'll open this up for guesses, and I guess I will ask for the top 5. I'll let a few guesses start trickling in before I indicate some of the correct answers. (Incidentally, there is a 3-way tie at #2.)
A "postseason game" for our purposes includes all one-game playoffs, NFL/AFL/NFC/AFC championship games, Super Bowls starting with III, Wild Cards, Divisionals (including scheduled pre-merger playoff games), and the Bert Bell Playoff Bowl. It does not include Pro Bowls, or any all-star games. Alternates are also not included. For the rankings, we are completely disregarding anything in 1979-1981, and Super Bowls I and II that had special numbers assigned.
And, to head of the smart answer, "no number" happened 42 times and is tied for 14th.

#32 is a great guess, and actually was what we were looking at when I started compiling the list. However, it is tied for 11th with 44 playoff games.
#85 is way down the list with 33 games; #12 is at 32 games. And #39 has appropriately been in 39 games.
#28 is tied for 6th with 47.
Some correct answers...
#9 is tied for 2nd with 51 games. There are 3 times that it was legitimate from 1979-81, but we just discounted all.
#36 is also tied for 2nd.
#34 is first with 57 games. Fritz Graf (22), Gerry Austin (23), and Clete Blakeman (13) have kept that number in the mix nearly every year during their tenures.
There is still another tie for 2nd and the 5th ranked uniform number. The former needs you to think historically, the latter I would call a sleeper.

#5 could be up there with Ron Gibbs, Ray Douglas and Jim Quirk Sr. That would be tied for second as well, although it seems to have stalled a bit lately in the count.
