Army signaled for a fair catch on the opening kickoff of the third quarter.
The receiver muffed the kick and then recovered it. By rule, when a player signals for a fair catch and then muffs the kick and then recovers it, the play is dead. The receiving team is not granted the rights and privileges of a fair catch but the play is dead nonetheless.
Had Army made a clean fair catch, they would have gotten the ball at the 25-yard line. Instead, Army put the ball in play at the five-yard line where the receiver recovered the muff.

Army punts the ball away to Navy. The punt lands on the ground and both the receiver and Army players scramble after the ball.
The officials ruled that the receiver did not touch the ball, and Army downed the ball at the 11-yard line. Instant replay reviewed the call. While it looked like the ball touched the receiver, replay upheld the call of first-touching by Army and awarded Navy the ball.
It appears Navy got a break on this one.

A few things to unpack in the final, frantic seven seconds as Navy tried to tie the game. Tai Lavatai completed a pass to Alex Tecza to the Army two-yard line with the clock running.
Instead of running the ball to the umpire and handing it to him, he flipped the ball to the umpire. The wounded duck bounded away from the umpire and dribbled into the endzone. The officials rightly stopped the clock, as there was a delay in spotting the ball ready for play.
On fourth and goal, Navy tried the "tush push." The head linesman, umpire and center judge were all converging on the play to try and pick up the ball in the scrum. The officials ruled the Lavatai was down inside the one yard line, and the ball went over on downs.
Instant replay upheld the call.

The AAC crew can be very proud of their effort in the 124th Army-Navy Game.
There were 10-flags, but all were pre-snap penalties - no holding, illegal blocks or pass interference. The deep officials let some hand-fighting go, but it was consistent on both sides.
Army might argue that Navy got away with a punt touching a Navy receiver, but instant replay upheld the call on the field of no touching by Navy. Other than that, there really wasn't much controversy.
The talent on the field was not on the level of talent we will see in a few weeks in the bowl games. But the passion, tradition, sportsmanship and pageantry is something to behold.
The AAC crew can be proud of their effort today. They rose to the occasion, worked a great game and let the players decide the outcome.
