I was wondering if this was coming for awhile now. Besides Seeman and Pereira this job has showed to have a shelf like, usually around 4-5 years. I would say Walt ultimately did more good then bad, although Ben might disagree, but there were some frustrations with him. After the last 2 VP's of Officiating were so forthcoming to the public about the goings on both with the staff and with rule interpretations Walt basically stopped all communication with the public. I know Ben has had his own issues getting information from him. I am not even talking about inside information, more just basic information that has always been public in the past. I really didn't like that he stopped announcing the Mackie Development Program list. I also disliked that he told Referees to say as little as possible when announcing penalties and especially reviews. He wanted the Referees to be as vague and give as little information as possible which is ridiculous. While we don't need an Ed Hochuli explanation some plays require more discussion and Teams, Fans and Announcers alike deserve information.
Having said all of that what he did best is what he also did best in the Big 12. He hired really good Officials who deserved to get hired and were the best in their respective Conferences. And we also saw great progression from many of the young Officials. He is a great teacher and a great evaluator of talent. Anderson's expertise in those areas will be impossible to replicate.
As for who takes this position I have no idea. Getting someone like Bill Vinovich or Carl Cheffers makes a lot of sense if they want it. But neither has ever showed a desire in the past. If they want to try to get someone from the College ranks I always bring up Bill Carollo's name, Carollo has done a very admiral job with the Big Ten for many years now. But he has also expressed desire to stay in the Midwest. Sometimes these names come completely out of the blue like Carl Johnson and sometimes they were completely expected like Riveron or Anderson. The natural progression would say Perry Fewell but I don't know how I feel about a non Official being in charge of Officiating. For years the MLB has always had a non Umpire in charge of Umpires and I have never been a fan of that. In the NBA it has always been a former Official. In the NFL Blandino is really the only outlier and he at least worked as part of the Replay system for many years. It will be very interesting to see.

I would like to see more transparency brought back with the next leader as Russ mentioned. More detailed explanations on replay reviews and perhaps using social media more to explain calls in certain situations. Just felt more left in the dark under Anderson’s regime.
Vinovich would be a good candidate, but hoping he sticks around a few mores years to see if he can get that fourth Super Bowl. Vinovich and McAulay are the two best referees the NFL has had in the last 20 years.
