I saw the last couple of innings of the Orioles-Red Sox marathon. Based on what I was able to see, I thought James Hoye did a very good job. He was fortunate to have a game like that happen on a cool day when you can stay relatively fresh. I can't imagine how tough that would be in mid-July with the heat and humidity.

I just watched those last innings on my MLB.tv package....they were at 500 pitches by the 15th inning how much you wanna bet Hoye gets a day off?

Derryl Cousins with a new plate stance this season. He used to squat down squared up at the plate (box stance). Tonight he was using the scissors stance. Usually the older umpires transition out of the scissors stance (hard on hips, knees, and neck) and go to the box stance. Interesting.

He also calls strikes differently. He used to make a fist right up the middle and now he calls strikes like Tim Timmons where he points across his body. I still can't believe Cousins is 65 years old. He looks great considering his age. Hi skills have decreased a little bit but I don't see him retiring for at least 3 more seasons. He rarely misses games due to injury and at 65, that is impressive.

Brian Knight ejects Jim Leyland for arguing a check swing. Leyland didn't even bother to come out of the dugout but still got his licks in from the bench. Justin Verlander started to lose his cool and was almost tossed by Knight. I think the catcher was trying to assure Knight that they'd calm Verlander down so Knight wouldn't eject him. mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=21281083

stupidest, most pointless play in the game - getting rid of it will save 10 minutes off of every game

D. Cousins through the years has had different stances. In 1986 he called balls and strikes with one knee, went to scissors and then squared up. Did or does this have anything to do what the current supervisor's prefer.....Years ago Ed Vargo stressed the scissors on his young umpires in mid 80's and 90's.

I think Ed Vargo invented/perfected the scissors stance and MANDATED the scissors for all new National League hires. To me, it looks like an unbalanced, top-heavy, neck straining stance. For those who don't know what we're talking about, here is the scissors stance.
