Is this the first time that Tom Kowal & Francois St-Laurent will work in the postseason? If so a special congrats goes out to them for that. www.nhlofficials.com/press1.asp

It is the first time for Kowal (who has certainly been around quite a while so kudos for patience and perseverance!). It is not the first time for St. Laurent who made it last year.
The big surprise is the omission of veteran Dennis LaRue. The other change from last year is Greg Kimmerly out, Mike Leggo (returns to the playoffs) in.
On the linesman front, the only change from last year was Ryan Galloway out, Lonnie Cameron (also a return to the playoffs) in.

Saint-Laurent worked the playoffs last year in, I believe, his first full year in the NHL. Pretty impressive!

Maybe it is just me but I do not think actual performance factors into NHL playoff assignments. Maybe with one or two exceptions it is the same guys each year. When was the last time Vaughan Rody made the playoffs? Mike Cvik? Brian Mach? Andy McElman? If an official is going that long without a playoff appearance why does he still have a job?

When was the last time Don Van Massenhoven work the Playoffs. I thought he had a good run. Also surprised Dennis LaRue not working, is it injury related?
Also, how far will Paul Devorski go this year. It is not long ago, he and Billy McCreary were the top 2.

I've kept fairly meticulous records of the NHL Playoff refs over the years so I can confidently answer many of the above questions:
FredFan - Your sentiment is accurate that St. Laurent has made a quick entrance to the playoffs - but he made it in his second year, not his first. Not bad though.
Mike - There certainly are a LOT of officials that the NHL feels are good enough to hang around even though they don't make the playoffs. That's a fairly common trend (that I suppose distinguishes the NHL from other leagues). As to your specifics:
Rody last made the playoffs in 2008
Cvik - 2010
Mach - has never made the playoffs
McElman - 2000 - was an alternate last year. Missed the last part of this season when he was hit in the face by a puck.
Van Massenhoven - 2009
I'm happy to look any others up if anyone's interested.

There are 41 referees listed. 20 out of 41 is a tough cut to make. 20 out of 33 Lineys make it as well.

Damon - Of those 41 refs, 7 are AHLers under NHL contract looking for a full-time gig. (Lemelin, Burchell, J. Hebert, Banfield, Vinnerborg, Charron and Skiliter). Lemelin, Burchell and Skiliter are new this year and have only worked preseason games so far. The other four worked 20 games or so this year.
On the brink for the 3rd round - Chris Lee (28) has been moving up - 2nd round last two years.
For the 2nd round - maybe Wes McCauley (4) finally moves up.
As for the lines, it seems the top dozen or so have all cycled themselves through those positions. Maybe Tony Sericolo (84) is next to move up a notch.

Assume LaRue's omission is not injury-related. He worked the Nashville-Colorado game last Saturday.

Stephane Auger and Rob Martell have refereed 800-plus games and have zero playoff games worked. Having seen them in the IHL in the 1990's I'm amazed they've lasted this long.
