Officials, owing to their "part time" status, are granted a period from the end of the season until May where the NFL does not communicate with its officials.
I can't remember if it is May 1 or May 15 that the "dark period" ends.
I would hope that starting this month that we'll find out some more information regarding crews, roster, and new hires.

While the officials may know their crews on May 15, we probably won't know until later this summer.

Anyways I am guessing there are no retirements again. If true, then there will be a mass exodus (15+) at the end of the 2012 season.

Mike Carey is 63 this year (not sure when in 1949 he was born) so 6 years may be pushing it especially since Mike is the type of person who if he sees himself slipping won't hesitate to hang it up (was it him or Don that had that agreement with Garth DeFelice?). Hochuli is 62 this Christmas so 6 more years may be stretching it, but with how he works out I would not be surprised to see him last 6 years

There has never been an NFL official on the field at age 70. We've had a few on the field at age 68, but with advances in medicine and fitness it'll be interesting to see if we ever hit that barrier.

Ron Phares will be 70 in this calendar year and Tom Barnes will be 69. They (NFLRA) are far apart on a new CBA and replacement officials have been reached out to well in advance of the start of pre-season. Hopefully we do not see a repeat of the 2001 season, but with both sides being far apart, it's likely that the union could be locked out again at some point this season. We hope that it doesn't come to that, but that's the track they're on.

The rules are too complex and the speed of the game is too great. I hope they get it done. As always, thanks for the update ITK. Let us know what you know when you can share it.
