This a first (at least for me). Tim Welke is still the reigning champion on ESPN's not top 10. This week's challenger to his reign... Mike DiMuro.

Has it actually been *gulp* five days since the last MLB ejection??
Either:
a) MLB umps have been perfect in their calls
b) MLB players....coaches..managers have suddenly gained ultra respect for the umpires or
c) Its getting towards the All Star Break, and everyone is just getting too damned tired.
I choose c)

c
Plus it's been waaaay to hot and arguing takes too much energy.

Just as we talk about the lack of ejections, Mike Scioscia is run on the second straight Sunday, this time by James Hoye for arguing a safe call at home plate. I think it is a great call by Hoye but a call you rarely see. Usually if there is a collison, as long as the catcher hangs on to the ball, the runner will usually be called out. But I love this call because I do not see a tag anywhere and Lawrie does get home plate in time the second go around. Also love the nonchalant ejection signal by Hoye, he did not really want to toss Scioscia but Mike was not going to leave until he was ejected. mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=22758197

In most sports it is easy or was easy to identify who was ranked in top 3......Baseball seems a little more difficult to determine the top 3.
Is there any list/survey to advise who are the current top 3-top 5 umpires?

impz, probably about a decade ago or more (I remember being surprised that Angel Hernandez survived the mass resignation because he was one of the lowest rated by players/managers) the players and managers were polled. However things have changed a lot since then. If you are looking at current performance, I would not be surprised to see Gary Cederstrom amongst the highest rated (hasn't missed playoffs since 2002 and at one time worked four straight LCS series). Gerry Davis is another who has not missed a playoff assignment in a long time. If my records are correct the last time he missed a playoff assignment was 1997 (before a number of current umpires probably graduated umpire school)! Another who I like a lot is Mike Everitt. He is underrated because he keeps such a low profile on the field but he is one of the top ball/strike umpires in the game.

I agree with your three choices....one of my favorites was Gerry Crawford and I thought he hung around a year or two too long as he was hurting with injuries. I like Jeff Nelson and Ted Barrett from the 1999 era.

Fieldin Culbreth rarely misses the Playoffs also and has worked either the World Series or an LCS each of the last 4 seasons. Tom Hallion has the same streak going and Ted Barrett has worked either WS or LCS every year since 2007. If I were to guess, those along with Davis, Nelson and Cederstrom are probably the top in the game right now. Look out for Chris Guccione as well, he has workded the playoffs in 2 out of his first 3 seasons in the league and only missed 7 pitches during his first Playoff plate job. I expect him to be a regular in the playoffs for years to come.

Jeff Kellogg has worked two out of the last three WS.
