We'll start part three with some great mechanics. You can see the "rotation." Hot shot to the left field corner. 3B umpire has to go out and watch for fan interference, blocked ball, etc. There could be a play at 3B, so who has third covered? The HP umpire hustles up the line for a play at third. You don't see it here, but who's got home? Well, once the batter gets to first base the 1B umpire doesn't have anything pressing to do at the moment so he'll hustle up the line and wait for any potential play at home. Just because you are designated an umpire at a particular base doesn't mean you are married to that base and nary the twain shall meet. mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=22380775

Interesting situation in Washington. Rays pitcher Joel Peralta was ejected and his glove confiscated after a foreign substance was apparently found in Peralta's glove. Apparently, the Nationals noticed something suspicious about Peralta's glove a couple of years ago when the Rays were in town. In the eighth inning tonight, Davey Johnson alerted plate umpire Tim Tschida, who checked the glove and ejected Peralta. In retaliation, Rays manager Joe Maddon asked Tschida to check the hat and glove of Nationals reliever Ryan Matheus. In this case, nothing was found.

You need to click on "Copy Link" to see the URL for the video in question. And one can chop the unnecessary details after the content_id.

Man, that looked scary. I'm sure Jerry has already been evaluated for a possible concussion. Something really needs to be done about these exploding bats. I'm afraid that someone will eventually be seriously injured or worse. Extremely dangerous situation.

Question to those that have more info on MLB umpires then I do. Last night Derryl Cousins's crew was working the Rockies V Rangers game, but Cousins was not there. Wally Bell took his place and according to Eric Nadel, Rangers radio PBP guy Bell was the crew chief. I am assuming that Cousins is sick or injured, because if he was just on vacation wouldn't MLB have sent an AAA umpire to take his spot?

If it was a three man crew, then it was some sort of emergency (health, personal) that kept him away from the field. When an umpire is scheduled to be away, then a AAA umpire is brought in.
