As best as I can tell, Brian Gorman hasn't worked a regular season game as of yet. Would anyone happen to have heard anything? Maybe I'm not aware of some normal MLB umpiring policy?

Gorman has not worked a game this year. Neither has Gary Cederstrom, Joe West, Brian Runge or Rob Drake. We have seen Wally Bell, Jeff Nelson and Sam Holbrook acting as Crew Chiefs. I am not sure where those Umpires are but I am surprised because Cederstrom and Gorman never miss games. I hope they are OK.

Gorman worked the World Baseball Classic so he was healthy to start the season......

In checking Triple A box scores, Cederstrom and Drake are both listed as having worked in New Orleans yesterday. Often times when an Umpire is injured they will work a few Triple A games before coming back to the majors so I have a feeling we will see those two very shortly.

I'm a little concerned about Brian Runge. He has been injury prone in his career and has missed chunks of time several seasons.

Cliff Pennington of the Dbacks takes a nice low strike three....slams his bat on home plate, breaking it...good bye! No brainer for Jim Reynolds! mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=26266091Notice how long it takes Scully to realize Pennington got ejected, though...

Have had that a couple of times - the hard part is explaining how the lead foot was in the air OVER the plate..

nyasablue, Run Luciano had that exact same play in the 1978 ALCS. He correctly called Lou Pinella out at the plate. You can imagine what Lou did after being called out......
There's good footage of it somewhere.
Luciano says Thurman Munson came up the next inning saying, "you're still wrong on that play." Luciano told him, "Don't start." Luciano and Munson didn't get along. Munson said, "I'll bail you out." Munson hit a HR to tie the game back up. Munson crossed the plate and said, "You're welcome." In his book, Luciano said, "I didn't know whether or slug him or kiss him."

I think Greg Gibson overthought this play. It looked like he started to call the runner out, the thought about it and changed his mind. Generally, you're better off to trust your first instinct.
