Rumor is: expect to hear a couple more names retiring before July 2014. Voluntarily or in lieu of being fired?

Nice article. Wow, in his rookie season he had a game with 10 downgrades . Talk about coming a long way since then.

I'm hearing that there are some wait-and-see approaches out there. Some of the officials who sat most of the season out with injuries could be turning down "free" money if they return next year (career-ending injuries have certain monetary payoffs). It also seems there may be a few involuntary retirements, either from the lower tier or as a means to manage the turnover over the next few years.
There are still some guys that haven't made up their mind on retirement.
If we don't find out now, we will have the final word in late May.

Hi ZebraBlog.... you could see Green & his knee problems about 5 yrs ago. Also U-31 & HL-28 need to watch out with their knees too. I am big into biomechanics/gaits...

Currently at 5. Could reach double figures. We have no names, but rumors are flying.
I guess that is a long way to say, "Stay tuned."

Sorry to see Winter retire, but everyone's time comes. I hope he can stay involved in officiating in come capacity, if that is his wish.

I'm a bit surprised by Winter's retirement. Thought he had 2 or 3 more years left in the tank, but I guess he felt it was time.
Winter had a solid career. While I used to view him as kind of bland, I began to appreciate his work more and more as the years went on. Its unfortunate that he never had an opportunity to work a CC or a Super Bowl during his career.

Read the article in footballzebra.com.
It doesn't seem all that voluntarily to me (although you can draw your own conclusions).
Of course, Al Michaels will have one fewer point to be made constantly during games Winters does.
