I think he got the Gerry Austin treatment. "You've had a long career, there are others we want to make a referee, the clock is ticking on their careers. We offer you a dignified exit. Thank you for your time."

I am not sure if this is the Gerry Austin/Dick Hantak treatment as someone like Torbert if you wait a year is not a big deal in terms of their clock. I think the league may have said something to Ron Winter before the season (cut down your penalties/meet certain thresholds) that did not come to be so the league offered Ron Winter the opportunity to retire

Or as my dad, who spent his career as a HR Executive, would say: "How long have you been with the company, not counting tomorrow?"

Update: Double-digit turnover this year. We are now at 10, and we might see 12. Mark Baltz, Don Carey, Keith Parham, and Billy Smith are not returning in 2014. Smith will be a replay official. www.footballzebras.com/2014/05/02/10833/

The person I feel most deeply for is Baltz, #1 HL on more than one occasion, but no Super Bowl Ring.

Still no word yet on Kirk Dornan that took that nasty spill early in the season- if he is returning.
Parham- non performance?

I wonder if we could see Parham return to the College ranks. He was a Big East Official so he would probably go to the AAC. This is a common practice in NBA who has seen fired Referees Tommy Nunez Jr and Kevin Fehr return to the College ranks the last few seasons. However this has not been common in the NFL and NCAAF. However Parham is still pretty young and I think he would probably be a good hire for the AAC.

I also think Billy Smith might have retired partly due to an injury. He missed week 17 last year and was not even an alternate for the Playoffs so I am thinking he got injured.

The NFL in recent years has not been good about weeding out consistently low ranking officials early on so there is not much to go by. I do not believe Eddy Powers worked again in NCAAF, but Jon Bible did and enjoyed more success. I do hope that the NFL is more willing to make difficult calls with officials who, after the expected initial struggles, do not show improvement

Some of these go back around 30 years, but John Leimbach, John Everett, Doyle Jackson and Jim Knight all worked CFB after their stay in the NFL.

Well what do you think guys. Are these the decisions of DB? Or AR? Or RG was just so disgusted with some of what went on that he decreed he wanted a big turnover. I just concentrate on the refs and wouoldn't know much about most of the other positions but it does seem like a full scale purge.

I think "purge" is a little too much since six are known to have retired. Were a few encouraged to retire? Maybe.
If it were a purge, like 2002, I would have expected some officials to go who botched penalty OR rule enforcements or whose games turned into a travesty this year.

I'm thinking Baltz and Don Carey were incouraged to retire as both have seen their skills slip in the past few years and neither recieved an on field playoff assignment since they went back to awarding playoffs by position rather than crew. Billy Smith probably retired due to injury as I guessed up above since he was still a pretty solid Official and worked the Divisional round just 2 years ago. Parham was most likely fired as he was only through his third season.

Keith Parham has worked scrimmages for the AAC this spring.
