Good to see Mike Everitt back at work, behind the plate tonight in Baltimore.

Wanna be a MLB umpire? Gotta start here, putting up with small time managers and small time crowds.......
NSFW language bleeped.

Interesting play in last night's NYY-LAA game. Situation...Yankees at bat, one out, runners on second and third. Batters hits fly ball to right. Both runner tag up. Throw comes into second and runner on second is called out for leaving too soon. The ruling is the run was scored before the third out. Upon replay, it looks as if both calls might have been wrong. It looks like the runner on second did not leave too soon but if he did, the out there was recorded before the runner crossed home plate. Now what do you do if you're either manager? Do you challenge if you're the Yankees? While you might win and have a runner on third, if you lose the challenge, they might take the run away. Conversely, if you're the Angels do you challenge the run should not have been allowed because if that challenge is upheld, they might see the runner on second did not leave too soon and you wind up with a run in, two out and a runner on third. Neither manager challenged. But it shows the idiocy of using manager's challenges. If you see something say something. As most calls in baseball are pretty obvious, there should be a replay umpire attached to each crew to decide when to intervene with NY.

There is something that seems a tad odd to me. How the 2nd base umpire made this call and not the 3rd base umpire (who, by the way, was MUCH closer)?

Many sports, but baseball in particular, are a game of angles. It's possible that 2B had a better view of it than 3B, regardless of proximity to the play.

Jim Evans used to say something like it is easier for an umpire to call a play 100 feet away with a right angle than for an umpire to be right on top of the play with a bad angle.

Some instant replay news.
While some criticized Gorman for going to review on an obvious call, I hypothesize that if Gorman would have denied the request, Matheny would have argued, Gorman would have had to eject Matheny and Matheny would have wasted just the same amount of time screaming and yelling at Gorman as Gorman spent on the headsets.
