The S in the Texas Bowl has nailed two very tough OPI calls against Baylor.

From what I saw, Batlan's crew did "A" work in the Texas Bowl. Sorry Becky.......I know your family ties with Baylor run deep. The Illini needed this one!

SMU V ARMY- Clair Gausman (WAC) The crew was wearing black pants even though the high temp in Dallas today is 72 and it was in the 60's at kick. I am assuming they were wearing the black pants to honor the armed forces. I heard they wanted fans to wear balck, even SMU wore black jerseys to honor the armed forces. Does anyone know if the officials were asked or chose to wear the black pants to honor the armed forces? Here is the story asking for the "blackout". smumustangs.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/122410aab.html

Holiday Bowl Dec 30, 2010 ESPN Umpire - Frank VillarReferee - Land Clark[/quote I like Land CLark. I really thought he called a great game last year. He worked the Nevada V SMU bowl game. He also did a very good job when he worked the TCU V UTAH game earlier this year.

The Big Ten crew called a BAD unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Kansas State. All the guy dis was subtly "salute" the crowd, and out came the flag. I think that's one where the official has to look the other way.
It ended up being a pretty big call, because K State was down by 2 with a little over a minute left in the game after scoring the touchdown, and instead of having the try from the 3 yard line, they had to attempt it from the 18.

Dennis Lipski's crew has called a GREAT Music City Bowl. They had some gut-buster calls at the end of the game and some very gutsy calls. The officiating was AMAZING in the last :30 of the game.
Now OT.

Okay, somebody explain this to me. On the game tying field goal, apparently Tennessee was called for roughing the kicker with no time left. Normally said penalty would be declined and North Carolina would take the points. However, the penalty carried over into overtime and North Carolina got the ball half the distance for the start of overtime. I understand if it were a post-possession foul carrying over but why would a roughing the kicker penalty carry over?

Off the top of my head, I think they do. If so, it would follow the same philosophy that the foul carry over to OT.

Off the top of my head, I think they do. If so, it would follow the same philosophy that the foul carry over to OT. This was a BIZARRE situation. At first, I thought that Tennessee had been flagged for a dead-ball unsportsmanlike penalty, but after I saw the replay, it was pretty clear that they were flagged for roughing the kicker, which SHOULD have been declared a live-ball foul. They may have made the mistake of enforcing it as a dead-ball foul. Hopefully we get some sort of explanation on it. If I had to guess, I would say that if a foul like this happens on the last play of regulation, the offended team has the option of accepting the 15-yard penalty and having another un-timed down (which wouldn't make much sense in this scenario), or declining the penalty. Since the kick tied the game on the last play of regulation, North Carolina probably had the option of having the penalty assessed against Tennessee on the 1st possession of overtime. If the kick had been no good, UNC would have accepted the the 15-yard penalty, and gotten one un-timed down. If the kick had given them the lead, they would have declined the penalty. But since the kick tied the game with no time remaining on the clock, they had the option of having the penalty enforced aginst Tennessee on the first possession of overtime. I also want to add that the crew did an excellent job of handling the situation at the end of regulation. Bill Carollo should be proud of the job the crew did tonight.

On the other hand, the Cuse QB ran a scramble up the middle, and slides down after about 15 yds, and gets hit late not once, but TWICE - no flag. they scored a TD on that drive, so no big deal, but on the ensuing KS drive, an Orange safety gets a PF for a pretty routine shoulder to shoulder hit on an incomplete 3rd down pass - which extends a drive which KS scores a TD on.... IMO, a pretty poorly officiated game: a C- on the grading scale used elsewhere on this site.
