Saw the replay two more times. Was the ball in the air when contact was made? Looks like it. But, the official woudn't have flagged a "looks like it." He'll flag one he thinks is sure. Man I wish we had official review..... I just think on a play like that it is too hard to be able to get the call right because there is so much action and a jump ball will have players from both teams grabbing for the ball. No call IMO was the right call.

Garth DeFelice saddles up! Garth engaged in the most pathetic, unsportsmanlike, disgusting back-and-forth with Cutler tonight in the 2Q that will earn him a 0.0 from me. Looked like a MLB guy... NFL officials, especially him, are better than this.

Jeff Bergman and Barry Anderson, this call is all yours! Note Bergman getting ready to stop his timer on this play. They rules TD and it was confirmed on replay. Great call, guys!

Rookie Dave Meslow and Referee Scott Green both got Com'n Manned during MNF Countdown. Meslow pointed the wrong way during an onside kick recovery. Green announced during the Arizona/Minnesota game that "Carolina was challenging the ruling on the field of an incomplete pass".
Remember the curse of Com'n Man hit Ruben Fowler a week after he was on it.

Something like 15 years ago, there was a game between Buffalo and New England. All I remember a certain Walt Coleman was the referee although he didn't figure in either call. With the Bills leading by less than a touchdown there was a controversial play near the side line where the Pat receiver was clearly stopped short on a 4th down completion and the two officials looked at each other and said, "Let's give it to him." In any event on the last play of regulation, the Pats (probably Bledsoe) threw a hail mary and some rookie back official called dpi. On an untimed down, the Pats scored from the 1 yard line to win the game. So incensed were the Bills they refused to play the PAT and the Pats lined up with no defenders on the field and ran it in for 2 (don't remember if it affected THE number Al Michaels likes to refer to obliquely sometimes).
In any event, Perieria made a stink about it in his weekly plays of the week sent to the officials (SI did a story on this) and basically said, unless you are 1000% sure, there will be a certain degree of contact on a Hail Mary and be very very careful in calling it. Ever since then, you hardly ever see dpi called on a Hail Mary.

That rookie deep official that made the DPI call on that hail mary was Terry MacAulay, who has done pretty well for himself since.

PI can be so subjective and at times may even be a ticky-tacky call, even if both players commit a foul a call needs to be made - period! Offsetting PI is very rarely called. The spirit of the rule is that a player gains an advantage by interfering, and if both are doing that, then neither gains the advantage, therefore no call. Offsetting PI is called when there are two separate enforcements: either a foul by one followed by a foul by the other, or by two unmatched players committing fouls at different parts of the field.

Video of BUF-NE 11/29/98.
Of course, the old-school CBS scoring bug blocks the official, so it is hard to see that it is Terry McAuley.

No, it clearly wasn't a first down and it clearly wasn't dpi. Two horrible calls.
