A play like this is why, from my understanding, that the rule states that the BR must beat the ball to the bag in order to be safe.

I haven't found the video, but last night it rained at Wrigley Field and Dale Scott ordered the field covered with the Mets leading 7-4. I don't know if they just scored to take the lead or what, but as the ground crew was covering the field, Cubs manager Mike Quade got into a big argument with Scott. It was weird to see Quade and Scott shouting at each other while the rain was coming down in sheets and the ground crew was covering the field. I'll post the video if I can find it.

It was weird to see Quade and Scott shouting at each other while the rain was coming down in sheets and the ground crew was covering the field. I'll post the video if I can find it. They were in the top of the 7th and no the Mets had been leding by 3 runs for a while; if the Mets had scored to take the lead in the 7th inning, under baseball rules of today, it would become a suspended game to be resumed at the point it was stopped. It was clear by looking at the wether radar that once they stopped the game, it would not be resumed. In effect, the Cub manager knew he had basically just lost the game and it would almost surely not resume. Whether he had a valid argument, who knows. Last week in New York, Bill Miller had allowed the Mets and Nats to play through a quagmire afraid that if he stoppedf the game and it wasn't resumed, it would be givin the Mets a cheap victory. It is an asinine rule period. Both teams are entitled to their nine at bats (eight if the home team is ahead in the last of the ninth) of course and a rule that should have been thrown out years ago. As it is, umpires try not to stop a game if it is close and there is a good chance they are giving one team a cheap victory which is what a rain shortened game is. It is interesting to note, clueless Bud has already declared the rule null and void for playoff games and the World Series. It is a rule who time has long ago come and gone and baseball would be wise to make all such games a suspended game to be resumed the next time the teams meet (and 2 out of 3 games it's usually the next dayh) otherwise we will continue to see these travesties.

Jerry Hairston Jr. ejected after HP Umpire Ed Hickox refuses to grant timeout. Good call by Hickox, I think Hairston waited too long to call time and he needs to stay in the box in case time is not granted. mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=15248335

Hairston didn't leave in a timely fashion. Might cost him some more coin.

Hairston and Richard were teammates last year. Hairston should know what's coming and keep his backside in the batter's box.

I sure hope Wegner isn't out for long. He's one of the better umpires in baseball and I "own" him in the Umpire Ejection Fantasy league .
