Good goal line reversal by Riveron.

I don't have any negativity towards Riveron. I've watched him have good games during his tenure as a Referee. That said, tonight's game has not been well officiated. The non reversal of the fumble, the UNR against SD mentioned above was a poor call. SD defender clearly tried to and did avoid contact with his head and barely made contact with his shoulder. Just saw a clear face mask on SD that would have given KC a 1st down. Critical in a game like this.
A play that keeps standing out in various games and I just saw it occur again in this game although no flag was thrown. The penalty I'm talking of is tackling or hitting QB below the knees while he is in pocket attempting to pass. Rivers of SD was tackled by the ankles while in pocket. The way I understand the rule is that it doesn't matter how gentle a defender is or whether he is pushed or trips or slips. You can't do that. I give all of those scenarios because Seymour of the Raiders stumbled and fell and in doing so wrapped his arms around a QBs ankles and made tackle. He got flagged. This rule is called so inconsistently. I don't understand why.

I thought Riveron's crew had a terrible first half but have been much smoother in the second half and OT.

Good goal line reversal by Riveron. Was it one of those fail/safe calls we've been discussing...when in doubt rule touchdown (or sucessful 2 point try) because it's automatically reviewed? (BTW I have no problems with that kind of officiating because it is ludicrous to review automatically scoring plays and subject close plays not called a touchdown or sucessful 2 point try that are close subject to coach's challenge as I said in the thread on IR).

Kind of, in real time it really did look like he got in and I think I would have called it the same way. That said, it was an easy overturn for Riveron when looking at replay.

HDTV has revolutionized replay. You can slow it down frame by frame in crystal clarity and when we see it on TV we think, "How can that official miss that? He was down by a whole yard!" That play took a micro-second to see knee/ball/line.
I saw about a third of the game tonight. What I saw out of a crew seemed fine by me.

I do enjoy watching Ron Phares work. How long has Phares been in the league? Isn't he the longest tenured Official in the NFL?

27 years. Longest current tenured official and we haven't seen one tenured that long in awhile.

Not to belabor the issue, and not to take anything away from the official, see my comment #18 above and your agreement with it. I really believe there is some sort of a secret directive, and it's not a conspiracy theory because I agree with the policy, to rule touchdown if there is any doubt and allow the ir to make the decision with no loss of a challenge or a time out to a team. Perhaps (and yes it's speculation) it was spurred by what happened on the missed TD in the Pittsburgh game on Sunday. Or perhaps as you said, it was simply a great call! We'll never really know.

I thought the game was choppy and Riveron did nothing to help it. I'd rate them a 2, or D and that's mostly for showing up. Went to bed at half time, game seemed so dis-jointed it was like watching paint dry.

I actually diasagree, Mello seemed pretty sure of himself during the call. If you watch when the ball breaks the plane is the exact moment Mello admanantly puts his hands up. This is kind of call that shows me why Mello consistently recieves good playoff assignments and rates out as one of the top HL every year.

Russ...I tried to be clear, I wasn't necessarily disagreeing with you. Even after all these years, IR has still not been properly refined IMHO.
