Very questionable unnecessary roughness penalty called against San Diego. The defender led with his shoulder and hit the receiver in the mid-section. While the receiver may have been somewhat defenseless, I don't think the hit was malicious. Pereira's take from his weekly chat: Comment From Sammy Chargers safety Steve Gregory on that spearing call -- you have any thoughts?
I, too am getting a lttle tired of this but it is the nature of today's game. It really is not a foul but the officials are told to call these even if they are questionable. They League continues to try to get players to lower their target area. I actually do think it is working but you will continue to see more questionable hits and calls like this.

Sorry guys, not to take anything away from Jim Mello, but when did the receiver establish possession of the football? I have reviewed the video multiple times and there may not be anything indisputable, but it seems the receiver never completely possesses the ball and then when he goes to the ground the ball clearly hits the turf.

That's a good observation about the process of the catch. Here is how I see it: 1. The catch is simultaneous to the right foot down 2. Left foot comes down 3. Begins extending the ball slightly, while still maintaining his balance End of the process of the catch.4. Slight bobble, but maintains control (the ball can move slightly) 5. Crosses plane of goal Conversion attempt scores. Play over.6. Third foot down. Player still hasn't begun going to the turf. 7. Contacted by defender and begins falling. 8. Juggles ball and loses control of the ball when hitting the turf.
