The following is an absolute gem of a production from NFL Films. Officials from the 60s through today talk about officiating. Every segment is outstanding. It's 44 minutes but I encourage you to watch all of it. A masterpiece: bit.ly/qBltMg

Jerry Markbreit's comments about him getting ready before the snap are some of the most eloquent words spoken about officiating that I've ever heard.

It was also fun listening to Jerry Bergman, Sr., talking about his experiences on the field!

Dean Look was absolutely fascinating about "the catch," and Tony Veteri, Sr., just wonderful. We need more of this.

I loved Jon Gruden's reaction after Ed Hochuli explained a ruling to him.

I think I could listen to Jerry Markbreit speak about any topic. I love how he describes accounts and tells stories.

I loved Ed Marion talking about dealing with Norm Van Brocklin. Officials must have dreaded going out on the field with Van Brocklin.

Markbreit is quite the story teller indeed. Gotta chuckle over his two-minute warning signal during the 1st quarter.
For me, the best story was Millis talking about the last Hail Mary attempt during the '95 AFC Championship. Remember that was the period with no instant replay, so he HAD to be in perfect position to call that play correctly. You have to wonder if somewhere on a play like that if the officials allow themselves to even think slightly "...my call will send one team to the Super Bowl."

You have to wonder if somewhere on a play like that if the officials allow themselves to even think slightly "...my call will send one team to the Super Bowl." You can't. If you do, you'll freeze and lose concentration. Yes, I'm sure he thought, "Be ready for ANYTHING" before the ball was snapped. On a play like that, you just have to let your instincts take over. I bet afterward he had a good case of the shakes. Remember Greg Gautreaux's call in Super Bowl 43? He made the call and Pereira reported that after the game in the locker room, Gautreaux was crying as an emotional release after the history making call. But in the moment he was rock solid.
