Here's waht Roger cares abut....the games are being played. Sure they are not being officiated as well as they might be with the regular guys but not so bad as to bring the wrath of the fans down on them in terms of no shows, the wrath of the networks down on them in terms of give us back some of the money. The only people who seems to care are sports writers who have to have something to write about on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays after giving us their analysis of all these games, sportscasters the same, people such as many well meaning on blogs such as this who think the officials are the most important part of the game (not a rip at anybody who feels that way). Both sides played a game of chicken and continue to do so and quite frankly, up till now, despite all the perceived errors (and yes they are there), the league has not seen any reason to give on its key demand which clearly has become the pensions (at least to this unbiased observer).
How much longer can this go on? At what point will the officials realize, as I've come to believe it no longer is an issue of who's right and who's wrong, that they are being painted more and more into a corner because it is now evident the league is willing to go indefinitely, as bad as many believe the officiating has been, with the situation as it exists today.
It doesn't matter what I believe or anybody else posting here. In many respects they are preaching to the choir. The officials were counting on a different outcome. Now is the time that many will have a very hard decision to make in the same respect as many of the players ultimately caved back in the 80's during the player's strike when many of us, old enough to remember, just laughed at the replacement players and replacement games and said they would never count them. They did and finally it was settled when the players caved. I just don't think this is a battle the officials can win. I may prove to be wrong, of course, but nothing I've seen up till now can leave me with any different opinnion.

Detroit/S.F. Play clock expired, they let play go and call DPI on the pass play? Since when is RUNNING into the kicker a 5yd penalty and AUTOMATIC FIRST DOWN? I thought it's 5 yds. period! If it's short yardage and results in a first down then so be it! This R called it an Automatic First Down! Crew seems to be fumbling on any penalty, milling around like they're in a fog. I'm going to bed, wake me when it's over.

First issue is nothing new.....this has been discussed here for a while.....back judge is reponsible for watching the play clock as it winds down and when it reaches zero he's supposed to look up to see if the snap has occurred or the team has called time out. Periera when he was working for the league and even here had admitted there is a brief delay between the play clock wsinding down and the play...has happened for years.
As far as bungling the rule, did the team's coach complain? And again as I've pointed out the league has claimed their regular guys manning the replay and the league supervisor are supposed to correct gross errors like that. Not defending it; it shouldn't happen agreed. But as I've said, that won't cause the league to cave....it'll cause a memo to be sent out to the scabs to remind them there is a difference between running into the kicker and roughing the kicker and that one carries an automatic first down and the other is five yards but no automatic first down.
Again not bad enough, I'm afraid, to end this mess.

Somebody help me. 1st qtr. SF snaps the ball 3rd and 4 from the 17 going in. Bad snap over QB and Smith recovers and throws pass from the 43 out of bounds, where it's caught by an onlooker 5 yards OB at the 20! 3 yards behind the previous spot! As I understand, this should be grounding with the ball put at the 43, 4th down and 30! It is called incomplete and placed on the 17. SF kicks FG with kicker run into and 5 yard foul results in a 1st down (4th and 4). SF ends up scoring a TD. Game ends with Detroit losing by a TD. This is a disgrace and the NFL needs to explain to Detroit why the league allowed this to happen.

Was this the play the previous poster was ereferring to? I was going to add a post script as to whether it wasx 4th and 5 or less or 4th and more than 5. In the former case if the referee announced running into the kicker automatic first down while completely wrong the enforcement would have meant a first down since it would have made the sticks. If it was the later case then I would blame the other coach just as much.
Here again is my problem not meaning to be a do gooder or anything like that. If the play on what should have been grounding was as described, why didn't the Detroit coach complain to the official near his bench that the grounding rule of being outside the tackle box only applies if the incomplete pass reaches the los unless the ruling on the play was there was an eligible receiver in the general vicinity. On so many of these issues, it scares me how little the coaches themselves seem to know about the rules. Something is wrong there too. (Did Al Michaels mention this as he knows the rules better than most pxp guys?)

I know everyone's frustrated regarding this lockout, but let's not take it out on each other.

I don't think this thread has descended into that....they've all been good questions and responses. At least I hope that's the way things are being read here.

I think we all agree on that. The only question is has it been bad enough to cause the league to blink?

roger goodell because he is a fraud. ALL sports commissioners are frauds. dud selig lets a guy who used steroids win a batting title, gary bettman on his 3rd nhl lockout and david stern is well david stern.
i am waiting for the day one of the players loses their temper and goes orlando brown on one of these scabs. honestly, i cant blame them. but they should go orlando brown on the supervisor who is a regular official who doesnt intervene.

That deadspin video is awesome. I'm one of the guys who thinks, "well at least the replacement refs haven't cost a team a game" but it's impossible to say that after watching that video. There are a couple of iffy ones on there, but almost all of them are blatant screw ups. It's a real eye opener for me.
