Foster would have had a better angle had he been at the third base line extended. No matter how "right" you are, you cannot show an umpire up by drawing lines in the dirt to illustrate your argument. An easy ejection, but a blown call.

This week, Mike Winter's crew is assigned to the Atlanta at Cincinnati series. Last week, Mike Winter's crew was assigned to the Washington at Atlanta series, which means that Atlanta in two of their last series was assigned Mike Winter's crew. I thought ever since interleague play began, which did away with NL and AL umpires, that a crew would not be assigned the same team twice within a 2 week period. Does anyone know if MLB did away with, or has in place, a schedule or rule for the umpires and number of times/intervals they can be assisgned to one team? You are absolutely correct on the rule for scheduling. Winters in Cincinnati Yesterday was just a 1 day thing. The reason he was in Cincinnati Yesterday had to do with their being 2 make up games Yesterday so they shuffled the schedule for 1 day to avoid excess traveling. In short, Gary Cederstrom's crew has the Braves-Reds series and they were in Kansas City this weekend. Because 1 of the make up games was in Kansas City Yesterday they decided to keep Cederstrom's crew in Kansas City another day. Kansas City and seemingly every other team inc close proximity to them is one the road so they didn't want to send a crew to Kansas City for 1 day and then have them travel again. So it created a whole lot of shifting. Winters was in Cleveland this weekend so they decided to keep his crew in the same state for 1 more day. The other makeup Game was in Chicago so they sent Dale Scott's crew on the 1.5 hour drive from Milwaukee to Chicago. Today the crews are back where they were supposed to be, Cederstrom in Cincinnati, West in Chicago, Winters in Milwaukee and Scott in Baltimore. The MLB probably made this more complicated then they needed to but it was an effort to save excess traveling. I totally understand them not sending a crew to KC for 1 day. One day isn't long enough for a crew to go to Arthur Bryant's for lunch...

Sounds like Angel Hernandez screwed up a Homerun replay in Cleveland and Bob Melvin was ejected over it. I haven't viewed the play yet so I cannot confirm the accuracy of the call.

Based on replays available, and Joe Torre's statement on behalf of MLB, the call was missed. I will not criticize any official, however, it seems trouble does appear to follow Angel Hernandez and a few other umpires.
Also, we must keep in mind only the best make it to The Show. I wish there could have been a better outcome for all parties involved.

And the funny thing is that Hernandez seemed to settle down in recent years and wasn't involved in multiple-ejection massacres.
If the umpires got the same angles that we got on TV, well...........it is a baffling call.

Joe Maddon gets ejected - for the second game in a row - for arguing a questionable foul ball call by Welke : mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=26965373Need we say Maddon gets ejected over the stupidest things? No wonder a guy like Price is such a jerk... Sooo.....tonight, same two teams...same crew....who will eject him tonight? Welke? Mike Everitt? Tune in and see! My money would be on Welke.Maybe Welke can get a twofer, and get Price too! He has the plate...

If the umpires got the same angles that we got on TV, well...........it is a baffling call. From what others have said, NY feeds them whatever angles they have of both teams. It was clearly a home run. And as I have said with the NFL, it is silly that umpires are called upon to overrule their own calls. Why not let NY have the final say.....I don't mind them setting up a system to get the umpire's input but ultimately the final decision should come out of NY as it does with the NHL (although substitute Toronto for NY) which has by far the best replay system in sports that others could easily emulate.

And the funny thing is that Hernandez seemed to settle down in recent years and wasn't involved in multiple-ejection massacres. If the umpires got the same angles that we got on TV, well...........it is a baffling call. I've always been one of the biggest Hernandez defenders on this website. He often gets crap but he has really calmed down in recent years. For a guy who is considered so confronational, how come he was one of the only Umpires who had 0 ejections last seasons? And if he's so bad how come he has worked the Playoffs every year but one since 2000? If you have that kind of resume you are not a bad Umpire. Regarding this call however, I cannot defend Angel. What the heck was he looking out? This was clearly a homerun. I am not even close to being a Major League Umpire and it took me less than a minute to see it as such. It is inexcusible to get this wrong after looking at it on replay. This will not affect his status as an MLB Umpire but I do think it could hurt his chances to become a full time CC. I had him along with Jeff Nelson and Wally Bell as the next three to become CC's. But if you cannot get a replay review right, you cannot be trusted to lead a crew of your own. It's that simple. I gurantee you Bell and Nelson would have done the right thing and overturned the call even if they made the incorrect one on the field. Hernandez decison just really troubles me because it was so obvious the ball was over the yellow line.

Maddon told Barry, "You KNOWWWWW it didn't hit his foot." If I were Barry and Maddon let me get a word in edge-wise, I'd say, "Skip, I didn't have it, but my partner at first saw it and was convinced enough to make the call. That's how we called it. It's a foul, that's it, let's go."
Plus, once Welke called a dead ball, you can't make the ball un-dead. What does Maddon want? Does he want an out? He was frustrated and decided to berate the young ump behind the plate who was over-ruled by his crew chief. Maddon should have taken it out on Welke, but he picks on Barry.
Weak.

This is something that is mind boggling. How an umpire can reach the major leagues and not know this rule is stunning beyond belief. It even makes the Angel Herandez gaffe look almost understandable (not the word almost).
What's next? NFL officials working the Super Bowl who fail rule tests? (just kidding).
