My very first game this year back in March, had a fairly inexperienced catcher totally miss a pitch, and it hit me directly JUST above where my leg guards ended, and it ended up exploding up very nicely, thank you. Had a nasty nasty contusion, and it jarred my knee up pretty good also, tweaking the old miniscus. 'Soft'ball just might be one of the biggest misnomers EVER. Do you use shin guards only or guards that cover the knee and shin?

Do you use shin guards only or guards that cover the knee and shin? I wear the Gerry Davis leg guards that cover the knees, wrap around the legs and have the notches instead of hooks. This was just a matter of the old umpire adage that no matter what you wear - that ball will find you. Also we teach at our HS clinic the very wide inside NCAA-type plate stance that has you looking across the plate. Our clinicians are both NCAA umpires, and instruct at the NY State softball school. The one clinician is the plate mechanics teacher there, and if it wasn't for her teaching career, would probably have worked very high on the NCAA Tournament chain by now. That school also usually has Ed Whipple, a very senior SEC/NCAA umpire there instructing, and the NYS Clinician is the one and only Jay Miner of Referee Magazine fame/infamy- so our state school is very, very good!

That's one of the most subtle arguments and ejections you'll ever see.

I know we use this thread to discuss ejections but man watching Mike Everitt behind the plate was amazing. Two polar opposites pitching and he was as spot on as you will ever see

Two polar opposites pitching and he was as spot on as you will ever see What game were you watching and who were the pitchers? Also, we can discuss any aspect of MLB umpiring regarding the 2012 season in this thread. I'm glad you posted something about Mr. Everitt!

Mets @ Pirates - R.A. Dickey and his knuckleball vs. James McDonald had his low-mid 90's fastball/curveball

Nats @ Phils today may see an ejection, as Hamels in on the mound and I'm sure the Umps have already warned the teams no hitting batters at all, with the Hamels-Harper incident...
FWIW the crew is Cederstrom, Culbreth, Johnson and Barksdale. I believe they'll be set up:
Barksbale HP, Culbreth 1B, Johnson 2B and Cederstrom 3B

I hope Andy Fletcher's OK. To me, it's a miracle that doesn't happen more often with all the line drives smoked toward first and third base. Harper-Hamels went off without incident, a fact I'm sure disappointed ESPN.

Fletcher actually returned yesterday and worked behind the plate with tape or a wrap of some sort on his elbow.
