I have noticed that more and more plate umpires don't shave the day of the game and look like they have 24-36 hours of growth when they work the plate. I noticed it with O'Nora and Davidson and a few others. Why? Maybe they don't want to nick themselves shaving and then sweat on those open cuts? Or maybe the mask is too rough on newly shaved skin? My guess is that it is more of scenario one then scenario two as the padding on masks is quite good. If anyone has recently attended umpire school or knows the answer to why MLB allows scruffy-looking plate umpires, I'd be interested in hearing the answers!

Dale Scott has always had the scruffy goatee look as well and this year I have noticed Jerry Meals and Ron Kulpa with a lack of shaving as well.

There is an earlier video on this thread I believe (or possibly on closecallsports.com) of Dana DeMuth and he is sporting the Bill Hohn-style mustache. I think it looks horrible on him

The thing I find interesting is that Puig never looked over to 2nd. He turned his head right to see where the ball was.

While I can certainly agree with both ejections I do not think these were particularly well handled by Diaz, especially the Kelley ejection. I have always found waving your hand at a player will just piss the player/coach off more. It would have been better to point to the dugout and if he doesn't shut up, eject him sooner. No reason to engage with him. As far as Girardi goes, that was a good old fashioned argument. The pitch looked low but was actually a nasty pitch that was a strike. If you watch it goes through the strikezone right over Gardner's knees and has a crazy drop at the end.

Diaz is and always has been the most unprofessional of all MLB umpires. At some point, the game will be about him. Guess the Ron Cherry school graduated another one.
