I still think McAulay is a suck up and everyone thinks he is as good or better than Hochuli or Markbreit, but I couldn't disagree more. Tell me how you go from bottlegate to working a CC game, to no playoffs to the SB in 4 years? Sounds like a bigger roller coaster than the stock market and I for one aint buying it.
He also has the most annoying voice on the mic, just ahead of Walt Coleman. You may think I am hitting below the belt, but just listen to it.

early in his career McAulay had that reputation, but after his first Super Bowl I do believe his getting plum assignments has been justified. Overall is he better than Hochuli in his prime, that is a point that can be debated, but I personally think he is the best currently active ref when it comes to handling chippy games. I believe that Ed Hochuli is overrated on this board because of his muscles and his knowledge of the rulebook and his mic work. In terms of calls/non-calls on the field Ed Hochuli is playoff caliber, but not CC/SB caliber that he was in his prime in my opinion. There I said it, spam me or warn me or whatever, Ed Hochuli is not a god

The above two posts are opinions that do not attack or question the integrity of the officials named or wish personal or professional ill-will on the officials named.
I myself have said there was the impression that McAulay was a teacher's pet for getting such plum assignments so early in his career. I wouldn't have personally put it the way timjohnson put it, but it's pretty much the same sentiment.
Posts like the two above are fine, even though all on this board may not agree.

i've never had any problem with mcaulay. i personally don't care how the sound on the mic if they get it right (but for anyone who wants to say someone sounds annoying, see boger)... anyhow, i think mcaulay is one of the better referees, especially in chippy games. put it this way...if the ravens-steelers are playing (always a chippy game) would you rather mcaulay or one of the young guys like blakeman, cheffers or riveron... i know i'd take mcaulay any day

Not sure I would lump Riveron in with Blakeman and Cheffers. Riveron is probably the one referee developed during Pereira and Johnson's tenure that has been a little weak in my opinion. Boger had some early struggles, but has progressed. Riveron showed flashes initially, but has not developed at all. In fact some of his gaffes this year have been among the most egregious of the officiating this year

Jeff Triplette has really regressed this year. Watching him, he looks like a deer in the headlights and on the mic he is constantly struggling to get the calls out which for a veteran I find a little disappointing.

WK #14 2010 Giants VS Vikings Giants are stuck in Kansas City.. No planes flying into the Metro(Minn.). SI PeterKing --> Giants team plane diverted to Kansas City, @giantspathanlon reports. Minneapolis airport closed due to driving snow and 25-mph winds. there is no way a bus will make it through that storm ... Attention Tom Coughlin. What about the Referee & Officials?

Since the crews usually travel the day before the game and the airport at MSP is totally closed, I doubt if the officials are there....ultimately I really suspect the game will end up being played at 1505 (GMT -6)

I have done hand scheduling and computer scheduling for most of my adult life - for the crew scheduling for 2010 - I give the supervisory staff an F. Just curious as to why you grade them so low?

My apologies to all Chicagoians, but I very much want to see a game played in the snowstorm they're about to have descend on them (and me, for that matter). It's already a 4pm game, so I expect to see low visibility (only using the ground cameras would be nice), swirling winds, and the need to constantly shovel off the yard/end lines. I have the flu and a sinus infection and despite that, I'm going to have to shovel tomorrow, so at least let me have the snowy game!

The NFL is hedging on just what they're going to do about the Giant-Viking game. As it stands now, the Giants are overnighting in KC and will be trying to fly in leaving KC at 0600 gmt -6 tomorrow morning. That could get them in with a reasonable chance if MSP is open and the highways plowed (well this is the Twin Cities, not NYC) but....
I doubt extremely that the officials were able to get to Minneapolis and while the one charter flight could get in, what about all the cancelled flights from wherever they are coming from unless....
The Giants are a classy organization under the Mara family (as well as Tisch) and I wonder if the NFL might have had the officials fly to KC and asked the Giants as a favor to let them go with them on their charter. That's the only way I can see the officials getting into MSP in time for a 1200 gmt -6 game.

in answering the question by russ - 1. an imbalance in prime time assignments 2. an imbalance in " plum assignments" 3. weeks off - Ron Winter wk 1 and 4, Morelli 2 and 5, McAulay 4 and 6,Parry 8 and 10 - if the teams go to a 20 wk schedule with 2 off weeks - how many would like 4 and 6 - and I could go on 4. there are 7 "west" crews - Morelli's crew with 4 from Calif. have been in Seattle and that's it for the west - Leavy's crew with 4 from the fare west have been to SD. BUT the east crew with Triplette went to Sea wk 7,Oakland wk 9,San Diego wk 11 - 8 hr.out, 8 hrs.back every other wk - plus working another job - hello - 6 of Parry's crew have worked at least 1 game near their home base - same for McAulay's - none of Hochuli's have had that chance - i will get the kickback - they work for the NFL - sure - but they are human beings - and if some time and care and thought were taken - much better schedules could have been worked out. 5. It has been mentioned that the NFL needed to cut back on expenses - with some sound planning - a bundle of money could have been saved. 6. computer scheduling makes the assignments less biased but isn't it strange that Coleman has not worked OAK or Hochuli SD . 7. If you set up "west" crews and "east" crews then use the plan - otherwise get rid of it.

billump, the NFL officially did away with east/west a few years back because it meant teams were seeing the same officials twice a year. It still happens that some crews are more "east" and others more "west," but that may just be a result of little shuffling in crews on a yearly basis or a desire to make it easier for scheduling flights and such (e.g. if you have three officials from SF area on a crew you could put them all on one flight)
Regarding the "plum" assignments I am happy that you are not seeing certain crews working important games
